Have you all seen this video? It makes me sick to my stomach... I guess I shouldn't be surprised but it just drives me crazy that people so blatantly attack those who they have no idea about and think it's all fine and dandy. It's not! Ugh, why are people such douchebags?!
I flagged it for discrimination against sexual orientation. I won't even get into the religious aspect of it, but what he said about gay people is offensive, and at the root, just not nice.
"you don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school."
Yes that is the problem, not the economy. Thanks Rick Perry.
I don't think he was saying it's wrong to have people be openly gay in the military. I think he was getting at the unequaility of letting some people express their "secular" views but others are being condemned for expresing their "religious" views.
@soontobebyrdy: Seriously? I'm not even going to address that lol ETA: This comment was after your first post... but if you honestly can't tell that he is attacking people, then I really don't think I could say anything to help you see the light!
@Mrs.ChubbyBunny: So did I! I'm just glad it has so many dislikes!! It's really one of the most rude/dumb things I have ever heard...
@LGenz: Yeah what a genius! Thanks Mr. Perry for figuring out what's "really" wrong with America...
@soontobebyrdy: Gay is not a secular view, it is a sexual orientation.
Ugh, leaving this thread before my head explodes
That must be the worst political add ever. I have worked in conservative politics for more than 20 years, and I am ashamed of that ad. He has five different subjects on that ad that don't even correlate. And to take all of those subjects to lambash the gay community, just flat out stupid, unproductive, and flat out insane. I knew all these things about him long before he decided to run. He is just a moron ~shakes head~ this is why he is at the bottom of the polls. Americans are smarter than to vote for this idiot.
Not to mention that it's just patently false. Christians are welcome to pray openly in schools - just like Muslims, Jews or people of any other religion would be. But if you want your teacher to lead you in a class prayer every morning, you'll have to go to a private Christian school for that, for obvious reasons.
@natbug21: I honestly don't think he's the BIGGEST douche ever. I think there are some bigger douches IMHO. Anyhow, this is what I find funny. Have you seen this? The jacket in the ad is the same as the jacket Heath Ledger wore in Brokeback Mountain.
Ps. This ad IS targeted to Evangelical Christians and others who make up the really committed part of the electorate that vote in Primaries. Will it work? I don't know. But probably due to polling data etc, his folks were told that this is something primary voters care about. I read that his campaign was sharply divided about the ad though. Lots of them didn't want it shot and aired.

What people tend to forget about religion is that not everyone in this country worships the same God. The entire reason this country was founded was so we could have religious freedoms and worship whatever diety we please. There is nothing wrong with religion, but you need to respect other's beliefs as you want yours respected.
@soontobebyrdy: Except being gay isn't a secular view...it's a sexual orientation.
Apologies for the laughing stock that is Governor Goodhair. ::sigh::
@bRooklynRocks: That is a Carhartt, everyone I know owns one, including me.
@LGenz: I know I seriously debated putting this here but it just made me so angry! The fact that someone like that could possibly be a president of the US makes me want to vomit!
@tksjewelry: Luckily, as you've pointed out, the chances of him becoming president is about as likely as anything in that video making sense :) Also, your job always sounds so awesome and intriguing!
@moonadea: I know right? Since when have you not been able to celebrate Christmas at school? My sister is an elementary teacher and they have a Christmas party every year.... he is all kinds of wacko
@bRooklynRocks: Haha that is really funny even though I have the same jacket in dark brown :/ lol. But it still made me laugh
@Mrs.ChubbyBunny: Totally agree.
@tksjewelry: Not gonna lie I love my Carhartt, seriously best jackets ever made
@techie: Yeah I love how being gay is secular all of a sudden, I know more than a few religious gay people!
@natbug21: No christmas parties here, or at my son's schools in MN. They could not have easter or halloween either.
I think the point is he poorly (very...very poorly) trying to make is that there has become an extreme anti-majority view (which in this country still is middle class, white, and Christians) to the goverment that caters to every other minority, which isn't bad, but in the effort has drowned out the other people too. He is catering his ad to the people who will vote for him. His niche in the election is the Christian ultra-religious/conservatives. That is who will vote for him, so his ads reflect the views that they will share. The joy of the America govermental system is that, if you don't like him, don't vote for him!
BTW to whoever pointed out the jacket thing, that is an EXTREMELY common type of farm/work jacket down south and about a million people have it.
I mean, I really don't think a bunch of kids are sneaking around school guiltily hiding the fact that they celebrate Christmas. So they have to call their party a "holiday party." Big deal. I bet the Christians would be pissed if their kid's teacher kept wishing them "Happy Hanukkah" and had a Hanukkhah party and had them make little menorah crafts, etc (assuming that was the only holiday mentioned, not like a "learn about different holidays" lecture.) Since when is Christianity the only religion? Does the separation of church and state mean nothing to him?
@tksjewelry: Huh I've never been to a school where we didn't have a Christmas/Easter/Valentines Day/Halloween, any holiday really, party. Crazy!
@MissHobbit: me too...
@chasesgirl: Not trying to be snarky but I honestly don't care who he is trying to appeal to or represent. That man is ridiculous.... Well he is a lot worse than ridiculous but I don't think I can say what I really think he is ;)
@tksjewelry: That's pretty much what DH and I thought when we watched it. Even in central Texas, when it went up on the local news station people tore it apart. I feel like I was watching a really reactionary middle school class president ad from how much sense it made.
I'm really confused who keeps electing him governor.
@natbug21: I have been startled by the changes since I was in school, even since DS was in school (and that is only a few years).
@natbug21: Then obviously you aren't his target! Something he has been doing has worked for him since he has been govenor for almost 11 years. I'm not saying if that is good or bad. But the point is, his target audince votes for him, and does so quite effectivly for him. It makes since politically to cater to the people who have been voting you into office for that many years, the longest of any current US govenor.
Edit: I also have to say I must be a horrible citizen, I went to look up all the canidates for 2012 and have never heard of some of them before...
Whata dumbass! That was the lamest ad campaign I have ever seen. Did he really think the majority of Americans would agree with that?
@chasesgirl: Man, that makes me sad! How can someone so hateful be in office that long? Oh well, he's not my govenor and he sure as hell will never be my president!
@moonadea: That's such a good point! It is frustrating when a group of people always believes they are entitled to do whatever they please!
He really needs to fire his campaign manager and entire marketing team. I'm surprised this video hasn't been taken down.
@chasesgirl: I know, I haven't really found anyone that I am really excited about, but I have been crazy busy so I guess I just haven't taken the time to really go over any of the candidates!
@Cash000: I have no idea, apparently he thought there would be enough people who agreed with him for him to make that video... Although I hope he looks at the amount of dislikes he has gotten... It is a pretty staggering number. I don't think I linked to the original one though. Although there are some pretty funny videos people have come up with in response!
@chasesgirl: You have a good point, but that is where he and his staff show their naivity and lack of knowledge/experience to compete at a national level.
I've said it before. Rick Perry always misses the mark when it comes to conveying a message. If he wanted to make a statement about people expressing their religious views, this is not the way to go about it. I don't know who is advising him but they are doing a horrible job. As a conservative I am disgusted by this and his style period.
Can a nurse at school give a 14 year old girl an aspirin without permission?
Can a nurse at school give a 14 year old girl a condom without permission?
The church and state excuse doesn't always fly.
@natbug21: I keep replying to you because you make good points sorry! The issue with judging the outcome based on internet dislikes is the population that knows how to dislike a video on youtube isn't the population that votes. More young people vote in American Idol contests than they did in the last presidental election.
yeah, I don't... I just can't. I think one of the reasons he has been popular in texas is that his administration has a VERY good record of creating jobs, which is obviously an excellent thing. However, simultaneously, his abstinence-only state also has the fourth-worst rate of teen pregnancy, the #1-worst rate of REPEAT teen pregnancy, and some of the absolute worst standardized test scores in the country. He is an absolute mess. And I agree with @MissHobbit that it's unbelievable his campaign staff could be so incompetent!
@chasesgirl: oh god you just made me want to go jump off a cliff.
As a native Texan (currently living in Atlanta), I deeply apologize on behalf of Texas for the embarrassment that is Rick Perry. But I know no number of apologies will ever make up for him :(
@starbuck: His staff is incompetent, that there is no doubt, but this ad wreaks of a candidate that has taken over his own campaign. I have seen this sooooo many times. We have one here in this state that is famous for trying to take over and "manage" his own campaigns. IMO, it is the single biggest mistake of state level politicians. One good thing, this act of desperation shows those last of the followers (except a few) not to waste a vote by marking his name. I think the next poll numbers will reflect that.
@starbuck: Uhh oops? Which part? I hope the American Idol part because it makes me disgusted for my generation too.
