Appraisals are usually inflated.  But insurance will not just cut you a cheque, so I would only insure for real replacemebt value, and save yourself the premiums.

A good appraisal should accurately reflect the current replacement value. You can look online and see what your ring would cost brand-new to get a good estimate.

If your appraisal is a lot higher, you are paying extra in premiums to get it insured. If its a lot less, you won’t be able to purchase a comparable ring with your insurance payout.

Mine was higher than what we paid. They said they account for inflation.

@MrsHoneyC:  your quesiton isnt whether it was more than you paid but more than you were EXPECTING it to appriase for, right?? mine was about what i expected. the setting was 2k and the stone (heirloom) is worth about 2k (based on my bluenile stalking) so i guessed the appraisal would be a little higher, and it was — 5k 🙂 hope that helps!

It’s true – appraisals are inflated. Insurance companies do not just hand you the $ it’s appraised for. They replace it with a comparable ring.

Also the insurance company makes more money on the higher appraisal.

My ring appraised for $2262 but to buy it new would be $3400. Thankfully we only paid $650 used.

@MrsHoneyC:  I don’t know how much DH paid for my ering but I flipped out when he gave me the appraisal papers that I needed to  give to the insurance company. I said “is this how much you spent on my ring?! this is way too much! we need to save our money!” he quickly shut me down and said to relax, he spent nowhere near that. So yes, it appraised for over $10K I was shocked. It makes me nervous walking around with a piece of jewlery worth that much

My husband has been taking all of jewelry in to be appraised over the last two months. Nearly all of it has doubled in value.

Mine appraised for slightly more but it wasn’t anything too crazy. About what I expected.
