Hello, I’m new here. I apologize for my first post being a whiny post, but I don’t know where to turn for advice. I picked out an antique stone and the jeweller said he could design a band and setting for me. So, I looked, found what I wanted, and sent him the design via my fiance. What he came out with is not even close to what I had wanted, and half way through he said the other part of the design I wanted on the band wasn’t possible. What I had originally showed him was a delicate solitaire basket setting with filigree. He interpreted it as a 4 prong setting with some circles added and keeps pushing my fiance to add pave side stones and engraving, and the band is much too thick.
At this point, I’m just wanting to get our deposit on the stone back and abandon the idea of a custom setting altogether, and just look for an antique ring. Since the jeweller went ahead with a design before discussing the fact that he couldn’t do what I wanted, do we still have to pay him?
this is the setting i wanted, and the following is what the jeweller made. (the black marks are where he wants to add stones).

UGH. I’m sorry your custom project did not work at the first try. All I can say is both my niece and I went the custom route and hers was a nightmare and mine has been a success so far (ring still being made but I have bn able to see it and it’s everything I wanted so far). Now my niece is working with my jeweler and things are going well. It is a matter of finding a good jeweler who CAN do real custom work. And that can be tough, but not impossible…
As for the payment, I think the tricky part will be establishing what your fiance told him and they agreed on. But I’d try to talk to the jeweler and say that is not what you wanted, that it looks nothing like what you asked for. And that no, you want no stones on the sides, just like the picture has no stones.
Just wanted to say, if you really want that style of ring, don’t give up on going the custom route. There are plenty of good jewelers out there that can make a piece like you want.

I thought they always showed you a CAD image of the design before casting? Since he did not get full approval and went ahead on his own interpretation I would say no you should not have to pay. And he is pushing for his idea and now saying yours cannot work? Well it worked in the ring u showrd him! Stand your ground if u r not happy and get what u want – probably elsewhere. Good luck!

Apparently he didn’t show my fiance even a sketch or anything. He just guessed and went ahead with the work. We put the deposit on the stone in MARCH and still have nothing, so I’m getting irritated. I still think it’s too much money to spend on a diamond (I’d rather do kitchen upgrades LOL) but my fiance insists, so we’re going to take the diamond to a different jeweller and see what they can do.
