My thoughts also went directly to Titanium or Tungsten. I couldn't remember much to compare/contrast so I googled and got this site:
http://www.titaniumkay.com/titanium-tungsten.aspx
After reading this, I would definitely go with Titanium. As HL said, it is light and very strong. Also, with your FI being a hand drummer, I'd be afraid that some type of contact might cause a tungsten ring to shatter vs a titanium ring bending. While the odds of the ring shattering might be slim, personally it freaks me out a little. Also, consider whether or not your FI will ever need the ring resized. Whatever you decide, both metals come in some very attractive designs so you can't really go wrong as far as appearance.
My fiance works with computers and is banging up rings a lot. So, he has decided he wants titanium. There are some really good websites out there online that cater to just titanium and tungsten bands. There are some cool rings that are all black as well.
I also though titanium or tungsten would be good. A couple guys I know have titanium rings and they're holding up great.

My fiance and I have been looking at wedding rings, but have no idea what to get for him. He's a hand drummer and it is so rough on his hands. Any ideas on what type of metal would last for someone like him?
