So my cousin’s BF has asked me to help him pick out a ring! I’m excited to be able to help him and super honored that he would even ask me. I’ve talked about styles with my cousin before, so I have an idea of what she would like, but I would like to find a similar style at a reasonable price.
She is in love with this Tiffany ring:
We live in the greater Toronto area, so local jewelers or dealers would be great.
Also, what’s the average cost, he should be looking to spend? I know he’s been saving for a bit, but he’s also finishing school. I would hate to show him all these really expensive rings, and have him feel uncomfortable, putting off the engagement for even longer.
And so with everything in mind, I’m hoping you ladies with your super searching skills will be able to help.
Thanks in advance!

@Koala Bear: My ring is VERY similar to that and FI actually ordered it online.
He went to http://www.adiamor.com
http://www.bluenile.com is another good online retailer. Since they don’t have to keep stores, they have much lower overhead and they pass that savings on.
All the stones are GIA certified also.
The ring appraised for 50% more than he paid, and if he had bought it at tiffany’s he would have paid more than double what he paid online.
The online route is actually really good. They will even allow you to return the ring free of charge if you don’t like it when you get it or it doesn’t appraise for what you think it should.
Here’s my ring:
If you want more details about price, etc feel free to PM me.

@KatNYC2011: Thanks so much! I’ll get him to look around those sites as well

@Koala Bear: Those sites also sell loose stones. So he could order a loose stone and have it set at a local jeweler.
Best bets to get the biggest bang for your buck are:
1) Avoid large chain stores
2) Avoid high end “brands”
Also make sure that he:
1) Gets a GIA certified stone
2) Gets the stone independently appraised/confirmed to be the same stone that the cert says
3) Get the stone insured!
