My only advice would be to visit an independant jewellers. They will give you the best advice as most companies will insist you use someone they have a "deal" with.
@ladyartichoke: Thanks! We are both super frustrated with this process, as most policies we've looked at will cost £500+ per year, which is absoultely ridiculous! I've heard that ring insurance should only be 1-2% the value of the ring, but maybe it's different over here.
TH March are the best in mu opponion and from the research i did. They are the only UK insurer that will insure single Jewellery items or larger value items. They also do package contence insurance for all your possessions in your rented accommodation. I call literally every UK insurance co to try to find one for mine as it's a larger stone and they gave me the best quote. Good luck.
Hey there!
I'm a UK Bee! I haven't purchased insurance for my ring yet either however I've just had a look at this company and they seem great! You can get a quick quote too!
www.thmarch.co.uk
@MrsGo: I've checked them out and you're right, it seems like the only place I can find (at least searching online) that will insure a single jewellery item. They've quoted me though at around £600/year just for my ring (not including if we did renter's contents as well). Some of it seems to be location though since we're currently living in London, but when we put in my in-laws' home address (in the suburbs) it's half the cost. I have a bit larger of a stone as well, and after checking out your ring - gorgeous btw! - it seems like I probably have somewhat similar specs. Does £600/yr seem high to you based on what you pay?
@LaraW: Thanks for the link!
No I think that sounds fair, we pay a bit more but that is including contents insurance for our flat as well (we are also in London) I liked the fact that there is no excess, I can pick any jeweller to get my replacement (since mine is an antique this was important to me) and it gives me worldwide cover for theft, breakage, loss etc. It is worth getting a quote for full content though as this was lower than the quote for just the ring in my case. Just a tip :-)
@MrsGo: Oh awesome! I think we'll check that out, since it would make sense bundling it with renter's insurance. I was just initally concerned insuring my ring w/renter's would have restrictions (as in, it would only cover the ring if something happened to it in the home, or some weird fine print). Thanks for your help!
We have my ring insured on our contents insurance and it's covered worldwide for pretty much anything. It's a much less valuable ring, but in total our renewal was only £213 this year.
@SpecialSundae: It does depend on the value of the ring though. My normal insurer would not cover mine which is why I had to go with TH Smith.
@ane7: No problem at all! The only restriction I have is basically that I have to wear it at all times or put it in a safe if I am not wearing it which I am fine with. I don't generally take it off anyway.
I went with TH March. They were recommended to me by Joseph Bonnar, our jewellers, when we bought my engagment ring. I got the comprehensive international cover because I travel a lot.
I love Bonnar's! Are you an Edinburgh girl too then? My ring is fairly valuable but our insurer is actually pretty generous with named items.
@SpecialSundae: Oh I didn't by any means mean that yours isn't valuable!
It can be because we live in London as well but I called around insurers for a whole day and struggles to find one that would cover my ring. It was crazy! One guy actually told me that it is difficuly to get insurance on any ring with a value of more that £3k which i was really surprised to hear. I didn't in any way meant to offend anyone. x
@MrsGo: I'm getting mine revalued because I wasn't happy with the one my fiance got last year, but it's well over £3k... We're with RAC and they've been amazing about having at as a named item insured at full value worldwide under our insurance. It may well be worth getting a quote from them next time you're renewing your contents insurance.
Brilliant! I've actually been meaning to get mine covered too, but didn't know where to start. Thanks Bees!!
@SpecialSundae: Thanks, I'll check it out next year. And have it revalued if you aren't happy with it, especially now that gold has gone up so much in price!
£600 per year, really? About what value of ring does this cover? I have more than £10,000 of camera equipment insured for about £300 per year, and that's expensive, so this seems insane! Will be super interested to hear if any bees have other suggestions. (:
@Miss Dee: I love your avatar. My FI gave me the first Simon's Cat book pre-publication as a "just because" gift when he was doing some IT support at the publishers (because he knew I loved Simon's Cat).
@MrsGo: I'm going to go back to the jeweller who valued it in 2006. They're experts in antique jewellery, whereas the guy we used this time wasn't. He actually valued it at £350 LESS than the previous valuation that had been done 4 years before (with the ring in the same condition).
@Tessa931: Have you been to Goodwins? Not quite as pretty as Bonnar's, but they have some lovely things. They always did the valuations on my grandma's ring before the duff one we got just before he proposed. I'm going in on Saturday to drop my Bohemian garnets off for maintenance before the wedding. Sadly Bonnars only do maintenance and repairs on items they sold.
Simon's Cat will always get a giggle out of me... and I'll settle with watching his youtube clips until I finally get to get another cat :)
@Jade33: Yeah, unfortunately it looks like £600/year is pretty reasonable for living in London, especially if I can get contents insurance with it. My ring is valued at a bit over £23,000, so that certainly doesn't help!

Hi everyone, I was wondering if there were any UK bees out there that could help us out with our insurance for my ring? We are trying to find the best policy at the moment, but are unsure of where to go for that. I'm familiar with US policies/plans, but have no clue really what to do overseas. We are currently renting a flat in London, and have no plans at the moment to move back to the States in the near future. I've heard of adding the ring to renter's insurance, but we want to be able to essentially get a check if something were to happen, rather than the insurance company picking the jeweller and deciding what we get. Also, would adding it to renter's insurance cover it if something were to happen outside of the home?
We've checked out Chubb since they seem highly recommended in the States and are international, but it says (at least on their UK website) that they won't cover single jewellery items (they have to be part of a collection, apparently). I've also heard lots of Bees going to Jeweler's Mutual, but they are only in the USA.
Any bees know of any good, reputable, and affordable places we could check out, where if the ring were damaged we'd have flexability on where we got a replacement/repairs? Preferably a company that would write us a check for any damage or replacement needed.
