Jack Layton was a great man with an undying passion for Canada. He encouraged us to be our best selves, the best country we can be. He inspired us with his relentless enthusiasm. He died this morning of cancer at age 61. Whatever your politics, he was a man of vision and principles.

His final message to Canada can be found here: http://www.calgarysun.com/2011/08/22/jack-laytons-letter-to-canadians

Here's to a great man who believed in this country. RIP Jack. You'll be sorely missed.

Agreed.  Woke up to this news in Australia this morning, every member of my family and about 7 of my friends texted me about it.  He is a hero of mine and i volunteered for him for many years.  HIs wife Olivia was my MP when i lived in Toronto.

RIP Jack - you may be one but your ideologies will live on forever!

So sad. I don't really have the same view points as the NDP, but I always had a lot of respect and admiration for Mr Layton. He was an honest and good man that worked hard for his constituents. It's a sore loss for Canadian politics. My heart goes out to Olivia and the rest of their family. His last words to Canada moved me to tears:

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

    All my very best,

    Jack Layton

This brought tears to my eyes this morning.  Whether you agree with him or not, you have to admire and respect him for the passion he had and the way he stood up for his beliefs.

    RIP

I have been sad all day.   I knew he must have been dying when I saw his news release about a month ago, but I figured it had months, not weeks.   He sure showed us how to live, and how to die with dignity.  He letter was incredible, I have the ending quoted as my FB status.

"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world."

I was so sorry to hear about this.  I was glad to see that the news coverage has been heartfelt and really respectful.   His letter really choked me up - what beautiful words and meaning.
