I’m afraid I have no wedding advice for you but I have done the Riu chain for a personal vacation and enjoyed it. It wasn’t SUPER fancy (I went to Riu Palace in Los Cabos), but still a pretty good all-inclusive resort.

Sorry that’s all I have to offer.

I do like the chain for hotel stay.. Im not familiar with the others in regards to weddings, however the Riu palace in playa del carmen won’t allow you to talk to an actual coordinator until you actually sign a contract & make a deposit from my understanding. The sales coordinator has been unhelpful & they switched her out for new ones Bc she went to another Riu, I asked a question about the property & days later TWO separate people emailed me back within an hour from each other stating completely different answers and sadly I still even think BOTH they’re answers were incorrwhat’d rom what we’ve seen with our own eyes there. Kind of scary to trust someone like that & makes me very suspicious they aren’t familiar with the properties. Just seems careless.  I’ve also read several horrible reviews online from best destinationwedding.com etc stating the WC won’t get back to you until a month before your wedding bc they’re so busy & that just makes me uncomfortable, but I guess it depends what kind of bride/planner you are. Please realize I’m not trying to scare or stress you! I just wanted to worn you bc I’ve been stressed from their horrible system and on what I’ve read, that I think we’re going to look elsewhere. Hopefully up north in Cancun, the process is different & the wedding coordinators are better. Keep me updated if you can & best of luck to you!!!

Mrsrobertson- may I ask.. Did you think the beach was more beautiful in cancun or negril? How do they differ from one another? Was the riu in cancun a lot nicer than the negril? Thanks!!! And congrats to you all!

The Sales Exec will work with you until your date is officially booked but they won’t discuss any ceremony specific things, only where you want it, type of ceremony, package, date and time. And the wedding coordinators don’t really get into details with you until 2 months out from your wedding. They do many weddings a week and are super efficient. I have read plenty of reviews and while many brides stressed about the lack of contact until the 2 month mark, none of them had a wedding that went poorly. I’m pretty laid back and we’re keeping it pretty simple so I know it won’t bother me too much. We’re planning ours at RIU Palace in Cabo at the end of Feb 2015. We already learned that they day we actually wanted is booked already so we had to move it to Friday afternoon which is not a big deal in my world.

I would’ve been fine with the sales directors discussing details prior to booking, which I could understand IF they were more knowledgable about the properties.. However, the question I asked was in regards to a photo they sent me of the ceremony set up on the beach. There’s 5 Riu properties in Playa. When I questioned which hotel the photo they sent me was taken, I had one sales rep answer a complete different hotel than the person that emailed me an hour later answering those same questions. And FI & I think it’s neither of those two, b/c there’s a gate in the photo on the beach and only one of their hotels we visited over there had a gate & beach set up like that, where as the others did not. That was a big red flag. They also refuse to send photos of any actual weddings which is so odd to me. They say its to protect the couples privacy while I’m sure most brides don’t care and would be happy to share with others, so the fact that they refuse to send any is unfortunate. I’m now talking to another hotel where the actual wedding coordinator is replying back to me.. I’ve heard amazing things about her & they’re happy to share photos & very knowledgable. This was just my experience w/RIU and I’m sure they vary by location. Hopefully everyone has a better experience. We had REALLY wanted to get married there, but by not getting solid answers & some other disappointments through them + others bad reviews, I don’t think we’ll be getting married there after all. Makes me sad bc we even got engaged there so it had special meaning for us :/.

BusyLABee:  are you still getting married at Riu Palace Peninsula?     (I am.  in June). I thought I’d seen on another post that you had decided on a different location.   Just checking,  in case we could share any information with each other about Riu.

BusyLABee:  yay! So exciting ! I originally thought I wanted the royal package but now I’m not so sure.  We have 45 confirmed guests. Some of the extras with the pricier packages arent anything we would use.  There are a la carte upgrades, which might work better for me.

We are wanting to do the outside reception and dinner but I am concerned with the heat.  Most of our guests are from south Texas so we are used to heat and humidity.  Plus I am planning on having the DJ and dance so it would be fun to have it outside.  I am planning on ordering hand fans to place on each chair so that should help.

I am using the DJ services the resort uses.. PSAV. Resort charges a vendor fee of $250 if you bring in an outside DJ service or photographer.  So I am using their photographer, Photopro.   If you need their contact info, let me know. We are getting legally married in U.S. before coming to Mexico.

My parents were in Cancun in Feb. and had a chance to meet the coordinator, Magaly.  They felt good about the place and that the resort knows exactly what they’re doing.

I am still working on welcome bags.  Truthfully, I would rather not mess with it, but feel like I should.  All I have so far is lip balm and koozies.  I just hate having to haul it all down on a plane.

I think most a the actual decisions are made after we get to the resort and have our meeting.  It’s hard to put it off like that.  But I am trusting that it will all work out!!
