I’m doing a river rock guestbook, which is nothing new to wedding-blog-land. Guests will sign their names on rocks and put it into a container that we’re going to showcase in our home. What I don’t know is what to put on the sign…I don’t want the generic “hey, sign a rock for the couple.” I want something beautiful or quirky or even a little funny. Are any of you doing the same guestbook? If so, what are you puttin on your signs?
I came up with this, because this is one of my favorite poems and I couldn’t figure out how to incorporate it otherwise. But is it too cheesy? Too deep for a fun, summer wedding? I have a poetic heart, but I don’t want to cheese up my guestbook with too much of it. Any advice on how to tone it down, if so?
“The Master Speed”
No speed of wind or water rushing by
But you have a speed far greater. You can climb
Back up a stream of radiance to the sky,
And back through history up the stream of time.
And you were given this swiftness, not for haste
Nor chiefly that you may go where you will.
But in the rush of everything to waste,
That you may have the power of standing still—
Off any still or moving thing you say.
Two such as you with a master speed
Cannot be parted nor be swept away
From one another once you are agreed
That life is only life forevermore
Together wing to wing and oar to oar.
Like the river rock that feels the flow of time, yet stands firm in the midst of a current, so we hope to be in life.
Sign your name or a message on a rock, so that in the rush of life, we can stop and remember this day. Give us the power of standing still.
