River rocks sound fun! I'd also suggest some centerpieces that have some kind of water in them, to keep with the feeling...maybe Save the Dates you and your BF rafting or kayaking in the river! All kinds of great possibilities!!
This totally caught my eye because I think it's such a great idea. You can use the river rocks as escort cards (for your guests names and table numbers) and you can have a beautiful color theme with blues and greens and yellows and browns (pretty browns, not yucky browns!). I love the idea of having water in your centerpieces. You don't have to go over themey - but rather just have an idea of a relaxed calm river guiding you through the wedding (cheesey, I know, but I love it!)
You could maybe name your tables after rivers you've been on . . . or use pictures of the two of you on the river together on the numbers. I love the river rocks ideas!
Thanks ladies! My SIL and brother did the rocks as escort cards (there's was a new england beach-y wedding) which I loved and definitely want to use that. I like the water ideas as well. The venue has all different vases and rocks (including natural, river type rocks) that are free so that would be so easy to do. Yay!
You could find a quotation about rivers and love that speaks to you and your FI and weave it through some of your paper products. I found this one with a quick google search: Love is the river of life in the world. - Henry Ward Beecher
I come from a family of river people. I'm getting married in my parents backyard, overlooking the river. A few years ago my sister made a slideshow of family photos for my parents. It had fun, upbeat songs the entire way through, until the end. It started showing pictures of my grandparents from just before they passed away. As this was going on, it had quotes from the movie A River Runs Through It.
"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters."
I do not know a single person who has not bawled their eyes out at the end of the slideshow.
orangie: I have to admit, I got a tear in my eye reading that. Beautiful. I know that book/movie is full of amazing quotes. I'll have to look through it!
prncssdva: thanks for the link. I should have done that in the first place. Duh! :)
I love all these things. I love A River Runs Through It. You should definitely try to do your enagement photos (or just have some photos taken) of you guys on a river, since it's clearly important to you.
I also wanted to add that we are having our pics taken on the river. Our plan is to get some pics of us/the bridal party out in canoes (they are 26ft and dont tip/take on water!), as well as have some pics of us fishing.
We're definitely going to take pictures by the river. Maybe for engagement AND wedding. We wanted to get married on the river where we do most of our rafting and kayaking, but a lot of it is private or hard to access so that wasn't an option. There's a place about 2 minutes (I'm not kidding) from our ceremony site that is right on the river and beautiful so it would be super easy! Maybe we'll borrow a raft some friends and take pictures in it too. Fun!
look up the song- now i know how the river feels. it is so pretty and has great lyrics!
ooooo, that's a great song. I've never heard it before, but I love the lyrics! Thanks!
We're getting married by a river! We're big river people as well. We aren't really having a theme, but we're trying to include a few elements that are fitting for the location. So far we have:
- a rowboat motif on stationery (still tweaking an illustration a friend did for us)
- using the song "The Water Is Wide" (the James Taylor version) somewhere in the ceremony
-using driftwood for wedding signs
We're also looking for an old rowboat to either put flowers in our lean up against a tree for decoration. I'm pretty excited! Hope this helps
pennednpapered: Those are such cute ideas. I'm sure it will all fit together so well. I'm with you on the lack of theme. I'm not really into, but wanting a joining element to all the decor. I like the driftwood idea! I'll have to seek some out. Luckily, we're not getting married until the fall so if I go up to the river in may/june I'll be able to get some. Perfect!
I saw this super variation of a guest book---the couple had everyone sign a kayak! Lol. It's cool if you're into kayaking! Or a wooden ore, that would be super cute. You could hang it in your office or soemthing...
@mtnshine It will be beautiful in October! I'm sure you'll find some driftwood between now and then. This reminds me I need to start looking for some to give to the friend who is going to carve our signs. Yeah, I really hope our wedding isn't too sporatic, but it is turning out to be a hodge podge of everything we love. My mom put it best, "we don't want it to be just a river wedding, a fishing wedding, a vintage wedding, a country wedding, a modern wedding - we want it to be YOUR wedding". Guess I gotta have faith that everything will tie together without being too random.
@VirginisaMarie I love the ore idea! I've never even thought of that.
@VirginiaMarie The oar idea is a great idea. Thanks for sharing. I like the kayak idea too, but it woulld be harder to find a place to put it. :) Now I just have to get the BF on board and we'll be set. Should be easy!
Glad I could help. I had a great photo of them signing a kayak but I can't seem to find it right now. I don't even know if you can sign an ore, I just pulled that one out of my butt---so you might want to look into that.
I've never been on a kayak or boat that would require an ore in my life! lol. Not much of a water fan myself---but I am always intrigued by different guest books because I hate the traditional ones...
@VirginiaMarie. You are too funny. I definitely know some non-river people and they would never have though of having an oar guestbook so kudos to you. You can definitely sign an oar...wood or plastic. I'll keep my eyes peeled for something now!
I just remembered another river thing we are doing!
Having a canoe full of ice and beer :)
Don't you DARE do this because I will make fun of you forever, but the first thing I thought of when I read river was "bass"... which lead me to one of those Singing Bass fish? Cake topper.
@KMsull hahahaha No worries! I wouldn't dare, but that is hilarious. We have one where I work and I usually want to throw it out the window. I think they're called billy bass. Don't know why I know that. :)
That would be cool to have a really nice wooden one that you could put above a mantle or something as a keepsake.
My Fiance and I are having a White Water Themed Wedding next Summer. We're both raftguides and met in 2007 through the company we worked for (we have "Real" jobs now. yuk!) It's still our number one hobby and we are always out boating whether it's taking family and friends rafting, kayaking, or enjoying a day of good ol' fashioned tubing. Alot of the things we are doing look as though they have been mentioned but I thought I would still share what our plans are incase something interested you. We live on 20 acres along side the river we met on and were thinking of having our wedding outdoors on the property but changed our minds as weather is completey unpredictable where we live and rain would be miserable, so we're bringing the outdoors in! Our table lines are beige with white underlay and we have two different centerpieces. My father and I made a few samples and will make the rest when our date nears. We used a strong birch branch and 2 1/2" thick trunk for the base to make miniature trees standing about 2-3 ft tall. Attached to the tree are wooden signs with the table name burnt in(names are after rivers we've rafted etc.) and on the stem of the branch we carved our initials. Votive candles will hang off the branches of the "trees."The other centerpeices will be Square Vases which we built Birch twig frames for. In the vases we'll place river rocks on the bottom and the name of the table. Each vase will hold two live gold fish:-) All centerpieces will have mirrors underneith to reflect light and movement with smaller stones and votives scattered on the table. Our "escort cards" will be flat river stones which we'll take from the river and throw in a rock tumbler. Our favors are going to be stainless steel waterbottles with our initals and wedding date imprinted on them. On our Guestbook table we are going to display pictures of us rafting/kayaking/canoeing and some little momentos of our relationship(game/concert tickets, notes, etc) the main piece being a wooden paddle with our names and wedding date carved into it by a family friend who does amazing work. Not sure if we will have people sign it like I saw on your thread but wicked creative idea! For our entrance we are going to have each member of our wedding party grab a paddle placed near by so when my fiance and I come out they can raise them up and make a little "roof" over our heads. The signs will be hand painted with white paint on driftwood directing people where to go for cocktail hour, reception, cermony location, etc. The other ideas I was considerig but am unsure of are having mini water fountains on the favor table, guestbook table, ecort card(rock in this case) table, and cake table. I was also thinking about having pale blue table runners across the tables to resemble a river, throw rope along the main stair banister and have mini paddles hanging by ribbon on the backs of mine and my fiances chair reading mr. *** and mrs. ***. I don't want to get too carried away with the white water theme so these ideas are on the back burner right now but may be something you enjoy.
I was wicked excited to see someone out there also had a white water themed wedding in the make to share and exchange ideas with! I was google-ing and google-ing and came across your thread on weddingbee and made an account right away!
Hope you enjoy and have fun with your wedding!

Any bees out there having/had a river theme for their wedding? My BF (not engaged yet) and I are huge river people (rafting, kayaking, general frollicking) and I thought it would be a fun psuedo-theme for us. We're not super into the theme thing, but I feel like I need something to tie eveything together.
I've already thought about having river rocks somewhere, but I don't know where or how and I can't think of anything else...
Thanks!
Happy Tuesday!
