So we’re opting for the closer/cheaper beaches of Mexico. Riviera Maya/Cancun area (haven’t picked a place yet). Just curious if anyone has been around the area if there’s anything that we MUST do. I’ve seen some really cool tours and excursions, but hoping someone has some first hand advice??

I’ve been to both Cancun and Riviera Maya. Both places offer excursions to Tulum and Chichen Itza, which I highly recommend if you like ancient sites. Swimming or visiting a cenote (sinkhole) is also fun. Xel-Ha and Xcaret are "ecological" parks, but really are just so touristy and commercialized that it was like going to another amusement park. If you’re into water parks though, you might like them.

you must go to chichen itza! it’s gorgeous! like pendragon said, hotels usually offer excursions to several places, like Xcaret, Xel-ha, Tulum, Isla Mujeres (i love there!)!
