I would go back to RM.  I’ve been to Jamaica and I won’t be going back.  Everything is spread out in Jamaica and I was tired of being offered weed.  And I like the Carribean.

I got engaged in Jamaica and must say that I am slightly biased because of that.  We stayed 2 nights at this AMAZING resort called The Caves- 3 would have been better, but we didnt have the $$- then went 5 nights to the Secrets Wild Orchid. I will tell you Jamaica is awesome.  Loved it. It is beautiful and warm and the resorts are great.  The Caves was honestly the coolest place I’ve ever stayed- it is an all-inclusive, but SMALL.  When we where there last April, there were only 12 other people staying on the property.  It was awesome. They have a life guard that you can have take you on snorkeling trips through the caves- for just a tip at the end, a cave that over looks the water with a jacuzi in it (we reserved it for sunset- they filled it for us, lit candles and had champange waiting), and they have the MOST AMAZING private dinner option ever- in one of the caves- its where he proposed.  You can also cliff dive, and the famous Ricks cafe is just down the street.  The food was good-very authentic- so if you want something Americanized- you wont get it.  They also have kayaking and offer massage.  At night when the staff leaves, they leave the bar open for you- so you can make your own drinks, and they have small snacks around- fruit, nuts ect, but also have a freezer full of Hagen Daz pints that you can take whenever.  I think there was also a fridge with sandwiches, but we never explored it. As you can tell- I LOVED it.  Now Secrets, not so much. They were going through some growing pains when we were there, and yeah.  The scene, the ocean, the food was good. Service. not so much. Regardless, Jamaica is awesome.  We went to the Dunn’s River Falls- and yes it was a ride- but we found another couple and hired Clive’s transport for the day- he took us to a great Jerk Chicken stand, and the falls and shopping.  We could have stopped anywhere- the luminesent bay, etc, so, lots to do.  I would say wear a fake ring- and be aware that when you are off resort people will approach you for money.  Other than that great.  Oh.  My brother went to the Sandles at Dunns River for his honeymoon and loved it.  Another place to check out.

Good luck! Hope this insanely long review helps!

I have been to RM (which I love) but Jamaica is my FAVORITE place to go !! !! I triple loved it ! the food , the environment , the people – just awesome ! Pending on what excursions you want to do they might be far – we stayed at a beautiful resort in MB and it was pretty close to the airport (under an hour maybe) . We will be planning our DW there or our honeymoon … or maybe both 🙂

We stayed at couples and we had a HUGE jacuzzi tub in our bathroom. There was also food at almost every hour of the night. It wasnt 24 hours but unless you are up at like 4 am, they had something for you to eat. I think it ended at 2 or 3 am.

Jamaica is absolutely beautiful and the Jamaican people are amazing. I cant wait until we can go back some day.

I’ve been to both.  There is so much to do in Mexico.  If you like to get off the resort, I would suggest going there again.  Negril is beautiful and has a great vibe.  There isn’t quite as much to do off the resort though.  I thought the Jamaican people were great, for the most part, but some of them can be very, very pushy.  We had a little incident on 7 Mile Beach- nothing dangerous, just annoying.

ETA: And yes, I remember the bus ride from Montego Bay airport to Negril being very long.  I’m not sure, but I want to say it was well over 2 hours.

im bias – because i stayed at couples swept away in Negril – our room had in room jacuzzi but like bathtubs with jets, not hot tubs. (but they had a few hot tubs around the resort too)

they also had food – i dont think 24 hours, but like pittbullover said they do have a grill that is open late night – i was never up late enough to see it close.

our shuttle from the airport was about an hour drive through mo bay down to negril – it went by really quickly and its a beautiful drive along the coast – you can see ocean the whole time. They also stopped at this little roadside bar halfway there and let us use the restroom and get beers for the road so that really helped. we were so excited that the drive went by really quickly.

i absolutely loved couples, i cant say enough good things about them! feel free to PM me if you want more details on the resort.

We just booked our HM today to the Riviera Maya but we were back and forth between RM and Jamaica! We went with RM because theres so much to do/see in that area! We can do as much or as little as we want. Plus we get more for our money there. I can’t wait!

I got engaged in Jamaica two summers ago and absolutely loved it! We wanted something different for our HM though and we’re staying at Secrets Maroma in Mexico. I think as long as you pick a nice resort, you’ll have a great time no matter what. The only thing about Jamaica is that there isn’t as much to do away from the resort as Mexico. GL!

We are looking at the carribean as well. It all depends when you are going. I have done some research and it says that from June to October. (Worst in September, which is when we want to honeymoon). Is hurricane season for the carribean which would include jamaica. Do some googling about weather and reviews. A great site is tripadvisor.com for hotel reviews and things to do for anywhere in the world. Best of luck with the plans.

We were in the same boat a couple of months ago. We decided on Secrets Maroma. I have heard the ride is less then an hour and the resort looks absolutely amazing! I looked into all of the resorts in Jamaica as well. My FI was (still sort of is) nervous about it being hurrican season, so we went with something connected to more land (if that makes sense). I still would love to go to Jamaica some day, but since this trip is all about us, we picked Secrets. I figured we can’t go wrong with some of the reviews I’ve read on tripadvisor. Good luck!

@retroindigo:  Secrets Wild Orchid is a beautiful, new resort right in Montego Bay, Jamaica.  It’s only about a 15-20 minute drive from the airport.  And you can still do excursions over in Ocho Rios or over in Negril.  They offer 24-hour room service and have whirlpool tubs.  Some rooms even have really nice hot tubs on the patio/balcony.  Or, you could get a swim-up room.  I’ve been trying to upload a couple of photos for you, but it’s not working.  PM me if you want to see a few.  Regardless of where you go & when, always make sure you get trip insurance so that you’re covered in case of a hurricane or anything else that would cause you to change your plans at the last minute.

Secrets Wild Orchid is wonderful!  We just got back, we got into the Preferred Club Junior Suite, it has a jacuzzi tub in the room, as well as a soaking tub on the deck.  Also the last 3 nights we were there we upgraded to a swim up suite, and that was the best.  Room service is the Preferred Club was 24/7.  It also was only about a 20 minute ride from the airport to the resort.  Also security is very tight there and we were not bothered even once at the resort to buy anything.  It was great!
