Never been a direct victim of it myself, but when I was working retail, some guy followed a woman into my store and start swearing up a storm at her because apparently she cut him off in the parking lot. I asked him to leave, he laughed in my face and made a lewd comment, then disappeared further into the store, and by the time I could alert management/security, he had left.
Yeah. FI and I were following eachother home on the interstate and this car comes FLYING up on me. I try to get over, but there are cars in the lane to the right. So I'm waiting to get over. They were basically IN my trunk and flashed their lights at me. I was NOT going slow (as my 2 speeding tickets can speak to) but I also was not about to be going over 75. (Limit is 70 in this area). Anyways, I FINALLY get over and let FI over in front of me, and this dude is hanging out the window yelling things.
Well FI doesn't take to kindly to this, so he gives him the finger. (I know, not the best idea, but he was mad for me.) The guy pulls up to FI's car and THROWS A WRENCH at his car. Luckily it bounced off the road and didn't hit any other cars. The dude also purposely kept swerving into our lane. He was INSANE> I was already on the phone to the cops, and guess what they did? "Ma'am, what do you want us to do?"
UM I'm giving you their damn plates and a description, obviously track the MF*ers down and do something. This is crazy. It still pisses me off to remember. I've never met someone that angry before on the road!
I haven't been a victim myself either but back in high school one of my friends was on her way to our drumline practice and she went to go pass a guy on the left hand side of the road. Apparently this guy had something up his sleeve because he wouldn't let her pass so she just got back in her lane behind him. Another car behind her was with the car infront of her and he and the car infront of her ended up pinning her inbetween and then guided her car to the side of the road. She said the the guy in the car infront of her stepped out of the car with a long metal rod. She said she freaked and ended up escaping by putting her car into reverse and slamming into the car behind her just to get enough room to get out. I remember her showing up to practice absolutely hysterical.
The cops were called immidietly but the men were never found. Its a very insane driving world out there! I admit people really piss me off when they just drive plain stupid but I always try to give everyone the benifit of the doubt.
Yup definitely been on the receiving end of road rage. Partly my fault though. I was traveling in the right lane, as my exit was coming up, but there was one onramp before my exit, which was very busy. I moved over to let them in, but I had to quickly get back over. Unfortunately the @$$hole who I was trying to get in front of wouldn't let me in, so I had to cut him off a bit. Well he flashed his highbeams and so I gave him the finger. He then moved over to the middle lane, when I looked over at him and he was fingering me so I fingered him back and sped ahead to get away from him. THEN he sped up and when I looked over (I should have ignored him at this point) but when I looked over he was pulling his eyes as people do to immitate Asians and that's when I got mad. I'm half Chinese, and ya ya I know Asians have a bad rep for driving, but I've never gotten into an accident or had a ticket in my 8 years of driving (knock on wood.) Anyway he was driving a company vehicle that had a fleet number on it, so obviously I called his well known company to complain. I was shaking and so so pissed. I did tell the HR lady that I fingered him too and everything, so I didn't make it seem like it was all his fault, but when he did the racial thing, that was crossing the line. It was the first time I've ever encountered anything racist and I couldn't believe it. Jerk.
@MissFlipFlops: That is so scary! This is why I never engage with road ragers, because you never know just how f-ing psycho someone might be. Not that your friend did anything foolish, it sounds like she was just unlucky enough to encounter those crazies... but whenever I'm in a car with a friend and they want to yell at somebody, I tell them it's not worth it!
Just this morning a guy was beeping at my like crazy and then overtook me at a red light! and it says No right turn on red. He was screaming and throwing his fingers up too. at the next light it turned green and he wasnt moving cos he was looking at his phone so I beeped at him too and he go mad and refused to move!
When i was a teenager going to camp this one guy cut in front of us and got so angry that he parked and came and banged on our door in the middle of a busy highway!
I admit to getting road rage sometimes, but I'm an excellent driver and won't endanger my life or anyone else's life because of it. Yes, people cruising at the speed limit in the fast lane annoy me. People pulling in front of me while going about 30mh slower than me annoy me. People who try to change lanes INTO me without looking annoy me. I hate to say that most of these offenders are women too. I do cuss like a sailor when I'm driving, and I'm guilty of tailgating, honking and giving people dirty looks as I pass them. Stupidity and incompetency just don't sit well with me, especially when I'm inconvenienced as a result.
Whoa yea I thought this was a thread about Bees with road rage, and I thought I was bad, but never like that! I just yell a lot when I'm driving because I hate shiatty drivers.
Yep. The road I drive to work on goes from 30 to 40 and there is always a cop that sits at the end so I ALWAYS break to go slower. Where the speed limit changes its also downhill and at the point the right lane either has to turn or you need to get in the left lane and then there is only the one lane. I don't want to cut people off so I usually get into the right lane ahead of time and then will slow to 30. One time I was slowing down to the speed limit and this guy just started blaring on his horn and swearving back and forth behind me. So when I come to the stop light the guy gets out of his car to yell at me!! I freaked, ran the red light and called the police. I had a similar situation happen before at the same spot but I pulled over to prevent any crazy behavior.
@meliss: & @arenyth: Not to be rude but what do you think tailgating actually accomplishes? I'm being genuine in my question here because its not something I understand. It's dangerous and can cause accidents and a lot of anxiety for other drivers.
@smith2be: Sorry I actually didn't see the tailgating part, just the cussing like a sailor and being annoyed with drivers that change lanes without looking. I barely even honk my horn!
I had that happen to me before. It is definitely a scary thing. I was driving from school to pick my friends up where they were to come back up for graduation of our friends. Going down the mountain, I passed on the left and got in front of a car because they were going below speed limit. And these were roads that I was driving every weekend. I finally pass and got back in the right lane since it goes into 1 lane down the mountain most of the way. The person in that car then decides to tailgate me basically the entire way down the rest of the mountain even when I slowed down so that she could pass me on the left. I was tempted to pull into a gas station to escape all of it but I am glad I didn't because I think they were going to try to hurt me especially with the way they kept tailgating me. It was finally when I got to a big intersection where they had to turn off to go a different direction did they finally get off my bumper. But they started honking and what not and throwing the finger as soon as they couldn't stay behind me.
I just don't get why people just don't get over when they have the opportunity. And honestly I know that I passed them on the left but they were going below speed limit. It definitely had me freaking out the entire time and I had my friend on my headset just talking to try to calm me down from it all.
@smith2be: No, not rude at all. I do it hoping that the idiot on his phone or whatever going 60mph in the fast lane with miles of open space in front of him will get the message and move over, because there are a dozen cars behind him trying to pass him. Slower traffic should keep to the right. I've never rear ended anyone, even the ones that try to deliberately get rear ended by slamming on their brakes. Like I said, I'm an aggresive driver but also a very careful and competent driver.
I've never been a victim of it but I have horrible road rage. Some jerk in an SUV almost ran me off the road once while I was driving up the mountain to get to Lake Tahoe last summer - she was driving very aggressively. I followed her and honked almost the entire way up. I was SOOOOOOO mad, like seriously livid. I seriously considered following her and slashing her god damn tires. Thankfully FI was in the car to calm me down. My road rage scares the crap out of me!!!! I need to learn how to control it. Unfortunately pretty much everyone in Reno drives like shit and the California drivers don't help anything, either. So I'm screwed
@meliss: I understand how that is frustrating but what makes me nervous reading that is it shows not just one distracted driver but two! Yikes! If someone is driving dangerously I would think you'd want to get away from them not as close as you possibly can. I would also bet that if the jerk in front of you is driving slow in the fast lane talking on the phone the last thing he's thinking is let's see whats going on behind me. His dangerous choices should not result in more accident causing behavior.
I'm glad to hear you've never caused an accident but why risk it? It only takes one time.
@Meealissa: I read a study relating to how road rage can be a sign of anger management issues. It discussed how its almost the same as driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol because the anger consumes you. Sounds like what you experience.
*Obviously I'm not a fan of violent driving. Very few things freak me out or get to me the way dangerous driving does*
When my little brother was a baby we took him in for his checkup. We were waiting for a space, blinker on, while the car was backing out. This other car purposely drove around, and inched their way into the spot as the car was pulling out. It got so bad that the person couldn't even back out they were so close. Another few inches and they would've scraped our vehicle as well. When we got out the lady was rushing her kids and my mom was like "WTF? Good lesson to teach your kids!". I seriously considered keying her car.
@smith2be: Yeah I'm certain I have some anger management issues so that's no big surprise to me! I'm thinking about taking a class to deal with that crap...I hate having road rage - it's so dangerous!
@smith2be: Tailgating is a necessary evil to warn people that they are driving slow in the left lane. If you don't tailgate them and give them plenty of room, they think they're going an ok speed. It's only when you drive up their ass that *hopefully* it occurs to them "oh yeah, the left lane is for PASSING, maybe these people want to get by". Though I'd say 50% of the time, the person keeps on going and makes my head want to explode.
Sorry - Road Rager here (though I internalize it).
Yup. Guy was in the wrong lane and tried to side swipe into mine so I sped up so he could get behind me. He followed me into the parking lot I was parking in and got out of the car and screamed stuff at me, tried my door handle, punched my window and kicked my car door. I called the police and am pressing charges. In short, this dick head messed with the wrong little b&*$h.
My commute is in the greater Boston area, so yes. People here are pretty bad. I got honked at and been given the stinky finger for stopping at a crosswalk to let a pedestrian cross. How dare I, right?
There was a news story a couple of years ago about some guy who got cut off, who then followed the other guy across town and stabbed him to death when he got out of his car. People are certainly crazy and it's contagious. I'm now much easier POed when I'm driving than I used to be and I yell and honk more.
@MissFlipFlops: That actually sounds like that organized crime where they do it on purpose to rape people. There was a few attempted instances in the area I grew up a few years ago. I'm glad your friend got away!!
I also had a friend in high school who was driving around with some of their friends in town. I think they cut off someone or they acidentally bumped a bumper. Something that was caused by them being teenagers and inexpereinced driving. I think they offered to do the insurance swap and own up, but the dude went back to his vehicle and got a car jack. He beat in their windows, but somehow they got away uninjured. Scary stuff. Thats why if I ever get angry enough at another driver I will just cuss under my breath or flip 'em off but below the dash where they can't see. I'm terrified of the crazies out there.
Otherwise I've only blatantly flipped off someone where they could see once. It was early morning, and I merged onto the interstate, and since they were speeding (like REALLY speeding) they came up fast before I could get up to the speed limit. They cut me off and were being dicks, so I flipped them off and got out of there. Stupid of me, but it worked out ok. I was really afraid they'd taken my plate and were going to track me down for a week or so though since people can be nutty about driving.
@AmeliaBedelia: That is insane of those cops! What do you want us to do? Really? LOL. I would have said "your job for one". They could have found the driver and written a ticket. The cops are like that here too.
As for being a victim of road rage. I don't know if this counts but I was driving along one night on a two lane road, this guy sped past me at like 65 (in a 45 road) and threw a bottle at my car...Luckily it went under the car and only splashed beer on the front bumper, but I was terrifed. I'm pretty sure I ducked, which isn't exactly a good reaction being the driver. But that's me XD
Wow, these stories are scary! When I was in high school some serious rednecks in a beat up pickup truck with a rifle rack on the back tried to run me off the road. It was really scary. As far as I can tell, though, they were doing it for sport, not out of rage...we were on a two lane road, I was alreayd going 10-15 mph over the speed limit, and they were tailgating me so close. I hadn't cut them off or anything, so I can't see what I might have done to enrage them. Unless they were just psycho or on meth, always a possibility.
Last week, though, I was almost sideswiped by a guy in a pickup (what is it with guys in pickups?) who suddenly decided to cross three lanes without checking his mirrors. If I hadn't ahd good reflexes it definitely would have been an accident. The reason? He was eating a big-ass burger while he was driving and not paying attention. Lord, give me strength.
@mightywombat: haha, yeh, my guy was in a pick-up too. Its 'cause they think they are so big and bad and that nobody will challenge them on the road, aside from semi-trucks.
To be serious, mini-van drivers make me mad. They complain that nobody takes them serious (referencing an article I read a month ago), but then they turn out in front of you going 20 mph under the limit. Please, take care of your kids, thats important, but don't be a dick about it. Wait for me to get past, and then have all the big empty open road to yourself! :)
Also, I really hate long haul grain trucks. The ones that are semi-trucks but then have a EXTRA trailor attached. Gluttonous if you ask me. And yes, I live in a very rural area. I don't mind tractors, combines, normal grain trucks, whatever, but the long haul ones anger me. I won't wave to them.
LOL, I don't know why, but all the sudden I had to vent about these things.
@meliss: I think part of that driving style is simply a "California thing." I don't think I know anyone who wouldn't do any of those same exact things. You can definitely be an aggressive yet competent driver. However, FI has been traveling to/from Texas a lot lately for work and he says that they are actually "worse" drivers there than CA drivers - I was honestly a little surprised!
Where I live, you basically HAVE to be an aggressive driver. Especially during rush hour. If you need to make a lane change, good luck! You literally have to force your way into the lane by making the person fear that you will literally hit their car if they do not let you in - welcome to the Bay Area!
My FI moved to the Midwest for a work assignment last June and when we moved him out there I literally felt like an a-hole everywhere that I drove because NOBODY speeds where he lives. Nobody. Not even 5mph over the speed limit. It was the most foreign concept to me! And everyone comes to a complete stop at each stop sign. And they make each and every turn very slowly. I'm not saying that I don't come to a complete stop or turn slowly, but we're talking a completely complete stop and slowww slow turns! So very different from where we're from! Needless to say, FI racked up two speeding tickets before he 1.) stopped speeding around like a jerk compared to everyone else and 2.) changed his Cali plates - cops in other states really do hate us :(

I live in a small town right next to a not so busy main road. My desk is right next to the window so I'm always wishing I was outside. Lately I've noticed some terrible cases of road rage which I find pretty alarming for a not so high traffic area. I've even had to call the police because some is just downright scary and I've been able to see enough craziness that warrants the involvment of the police. I don't know if its just because of the warmer weather or something that is causing people to drive like maniacs.
Has anyone ever been a victim of road rage?
