Anyone go or consider going for their honeymoon? Me and my FI are pretty seasoned travelers and want something relaxing, but slightly off the beaten path. Any recommendations?

We were in Roatan last January, and I can highly recommend Bodden Tours.  For $40 per person you get a private vehicle and driver and you can go anywhere you want on the island.  My favorite part was the monkey tour in which you go to Victor Bodden's house and get to play with his monkeys.  It was the best $4 I ever spent!  We also went to the iguana farm, and went snorkling.  You can see all of your options and prices here: http://www.boddentours.com/tours.htm .  Since you are renting a private vehicle and driver, they really can help you do anything you like.

The pictures from my trip are available here (my favorites are the ones where monkeys were climbing all over me!  Just be careful - the monkeys like to open up purses and take things out and throw them around so you should pack carefully)

hmmm, i just got back from there on my cruise vacation, but i was not impressed, kinda creeped out.  Perhaps we didnt know where to go but it was very 3rd world and unfortunately i didnt like it at all.

The area where cruise ships dock is sketchy.  People who go there to actually vacation usually stay on the West End, far away from that area!

Just to remember - it is third world, it caters to divers, there isn't much to do otherwise.  It is NOT safe to walk on the beach alone at night in any area.  Honduras is going through major political turmoil, that may be an issue.  Also, there was a big earthquake not too long ago that I understand damaged Roatan.  However, it is a beautiful place if you like nature and don't mind being isolated without a ton of conveniences.  The water is gorgeous.

If you go, make sure to watch out the window when you land, very cool!

I went about 4 years ago and loved it. It was just my dad and I. We rented rooms from an American couple who lives on the West End of the island.

It was beautiful!! The scuba diving/snorkeling was great. Very peaceful. Great restaurants, incredibly fresh fish, amazing views! Definitely rent a car and spend some time exploring. We did the iguana farm, very cool and different.

Didn't spend much time in the city, and didn't feel unsafe at all. If you're going, rent rooms from someone and they will likely have a private beach. The safest way to go in my book.

If you are looking to go to 'off the beaten path' somewhere in Central America. I would absolutely recommend Costa Rica over Honduras. Rainforests, beaches, volcanoes, etc. There are tons of reasonable places to stay. Politically stable and generally safer when it comes to the major cities.

Feel free to message me with questions!

For anyone else interested in Roatan, I also highly, highly recommend Bodden Tours. They were fantastic. My husband and I got hauled around the island all day wherever we wanted, did all the different tours, and got told stories about the island by our driver. We went to Roatan as part of a cruise, and it was the best part of our trip.
