My fiance wants to have a band play at our wedding. I’m not talking about a stuffy, hoity toity band. I’m talking about PopRocks (a cover band) that you can rock to. However, never having been to a wedding with a band, I’m not sure how that works. Do they start playing at the beginning of the reception, or do they play a set after the dinner/speech/toast/cake cutting etc? Do I have to arrange for music to be played during dinner before the band starts? This is all new to me. Anyone with similar experience…please help!

Instead of thinking of "what music should I play when" think about what you want your guests to be doing at certain times. When they have just arrived and are mingling with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, they will probably be more interested in settling in and talking than rocking out. Simiarly, during dinner they will want to be able to hear the conversation at the table. After dinner however, some will want to dance on that dance floor!
So I would say if you hire a rock band, then you should have them play a set after dinner. However, ask if they’ve played weddings before and what different type of music they can offer you. They could play softer music at first and then really rock out after dinner. That way you wouldn’t have to worry about them setting up in the middle of dinner.

We are hoping to boko a rock band as well & considering it as the after dinner party band.
