I have to get a root canal on on of my teeth towards the front of my mouth. As my appointment gets closer, I have been feeling worried. Has anyone ever had one done? Will my mouth be sore like when I get a filling, or will it hurt like when I had a wisdom tooth out? Will I be able to eat like normal just as long as I don’t chew on that side?

@Bella83: Root canals have an undeserved reputation.
I have had 3 and felt little to no discomfort. Your mouth is frozen just like for a filling. A root canal removes the nerve from the tooth so you have no feeling in the tooth after it is done.
You wil have some achiness from keeping your jaw open so long, but nothing that a little Advil won’t handle.

@julies1949: +1 I totally agree with this description. I was in more pain before the root canal than after! My jaw was a little sore, but overall the experience was like getting a filling, it just took longer.

I had a root canal as a teenager. No joke, I didn’t know I was getting one! My dentist told my mom and she never mentioned it because she knew id freak out! So we went back to “have a very small cavity filled” and after all was said and done I learned I had had a root canal! You’ll be ok, I promise!

@Jijitattoo: +1. It’s just like a filling: the initial anesthetic injection is by far the worst part. Then I didn’t feel a thing while the drilling was done, and no real pain afterwards. When I had my wisdom teeth out I was in pain all evening once the anethetic wore off. The root canal was nothing like that.

@Bella83: I had one done a few years ago. I’m terrified of dentists, but it really was not that bad at all. The guy doing it was VERY nice and very sensitive about my anxiety. It takes a long time and the novocaine part was uncomfortable, but it really was not an awful or traumatic experience.

I had a root canal last year and the procedure itself wasn’t bad – it was actually kind of funny feeling. My only issue was that he botched up the root canal and somehow missed a couple of roots that became a big problem not too long ago – I had to have the tooth removed – but I was told that this happening was extremely rare!

I’ve had two root canals (both on premolars and molars). It’s honestly not that bad…it takes longer than a filling because they’re cleaning the tooth and posting the tooth.
I’d rather have a root canal than a bunch of fillings.

Ok. Thank you all. I feel relieved. The anesthetic injection is doable, and I will be happy to have the aching and sensitivity on my tooth go away. I should have asked on here to begin with rather than freak myself out with a google search!

My sister had one a few years ago–She said it wasn’t too bad!
No advice here–But good luck!
