conceptually i love it, but what if you put stars by where you are from on the map? i like the idea of the skyline of the cities where you were born or lived, etc and the church, i don't think it needs to be literal, after all your initials aren't on the planet, you know?! but i really like it.
Ooo...I like where this is going.
I like the idea of putting some sort of marker on where exactly you will be getting married. I think it would be cute!
Let me see if I can think of something
I like crebre's idea of adding stars to the locations you lived. And then maybe you can do a heart where you will be getting married, so you can tell a story with it.
What's the colors/theme of your wedding? To make it less cartoonish, you could totally draw some inspriation from old world maps and antique globes. People will know it is a globe even if the colors aren't green for land and blue for water. I think the font would go really great with an antique style globe or projection map.
Oh, how cute would it be to get an actual globe and mark the spots where you have lived and where you're getting married and putting your monogram directly on there! You could use decoupage, or proabably just use sharpies. You could put the globe it on the escort card table or near the guest book. And after the wedding you could have it as a keepsake/art/conversation piece in your house.
Awwww I love the idea of marking it with places special to you! That's adorable! And the globe guestbook is FANTASTIC! This could go places!
okay, this is a HORRIBLE new color combo (I need to figure out how to just wipe all the colors, instead of filling box by box, haha) but I do like it better than the blue and green...
I knew you guys could help :)
I love the concept and I think you are getting closer to what you are wanting. I would definitly add the star idea to where you both live. I would maybe play around with a different font for your first initials and make them a little larger. Just a thougth. Great job I will have to download that software for my self.
I think it would be neat to add the city skylines idea. I like these colors better. Stars are good Heart does not stick out. I think you should maybe use a larger heart & put the date in it or maybe a shooting star coming from where your getting married with the date inside the shooting star! I think you could do a lot of awesome things with this. Love it!
I think this is an awesome idea, especially using the wedding colours - and using a globe guestbook for a wedding with lots of international guests? Genius!
can you use these characters instead of the stars?
got it from http://www.fontriver.com/font/cityscape/

Where are you going to be using this monogram? I think you are getting closer with the second version, but I think the letters are getting lost in the globe. I think you should simplify it because there is too much going on right now. Maybe make the letters in color but keep the globe in an outline? Good luck!
@crebre, you are amazing.
:)
I'm going to see about using an antique map, probably watermark it since it is kind of busy... I've only found ONE antique map that's asia-centric though, rather than euro-centric, and to get our cities in there, I really need it to span the Pacific. Guess most old map makers were europeans.
Gotta do it tomorrow though... I just wasted my whole evening doing wedding brainstorming instead of studying -- OOPS!!! and gotta be at class at 8 tomorrow morning... blehrgh.
thanks for the brainstorming session :) and I welcome any additional feedback while I sleep.
@DD: we gotta stick together!! I have a church somewhere in my collection as well, let me know if you'd like it...
i like the idea a lot, but i think you need to use a simpler, more clean and graphic font. in other words: something less fancy-script-y for the letters. if this is going to be used on small items -- stickers? or invitations? -- the L and J will so skinny and small it will be hard to read them. you might even try a typewriter font, to go with a classic travel theme?
For some reason, when I saw the stars, I couldn't help but think of the illustrations for The Little Prince - what if you go for sort of a soft watercolour effect? That way it's not as busy as using an actual antique map, but it's still got sort of a sweet vintage look to it. This is a 20-minute Photoshop hatchet job, so it doesn't look all that good, but I think it communicates the concept decently enough, lol. XD
@studio: that is stunning!!!
i still think i like the little buildings instead of stars (even though stars were my idea originally) especially with studio's version.
I really like where studio is going with this. I think your letters needed to be bigger and with more overlap, and the map on the softer side, to really get it across without being like, "WHOA, that's a globe!" I think the whole globe concept is a great idea.
I absolutely love what Studio did! I love the concept and the meaning behind it as well. Hooray for helpful bees!
Very cute idea! The stars look cool, in my opinion - but the cityscapes are awesome, too! I think with a little more tweaking and such this will look awesome!
I also agree that the globe should be the background; not the main feature. I like how studio made the initials stand out more. I also like how the globe is more washed out & I'd love it still with the skyline for your locations; again i'm suggesting a shooting star for the ceremony location. lol I think that would be cool.
@studio -- wow!!! yes, I love where this is going!
:) I knew it could be done tastefully, I just didn't know how... now to figure out if I can do what you did myself on this freeby software that I've never used before (haha) or if I should shell out and pay someone to help me.
Has anyone had a custom monogram made before? How much does an electronic file of that sort run?
I'm zero help because for the most part I'm computer challenged... but I had to comment because I LOVE this idea!
I'm in a LDR as well & I love how you're incorporating your LD love :)
maybe put out an Alchemy request on Etsy, for a graphic designer to whip it up for you? sounds like it would be good for your studies. :) looks great so far, though. i like the softer little prince version from studio.
Thanks, everyone. :) I love travel-themed anything and everything, so that was really fun for me.
I think it would be cool to sort of draw the skylines/buildings growing out of the countries and maybe even overlapping the edges of the globe a bit - I'd do a mock up but I don't have my tablet right now and I can't draw with a mouse, lol.
@daydreamwanderer - I'd actually suggest doing an Alchemy request for just the watercolour or gouache illustration of the globe with the skylines/stars etc, and then add the text yourself using your graphic design program. That way you have the ability to use the illustration for other things and add whatever text you like as needed. I don't think it would be too expensive - I've seen at least one post either here or on the blog about an Alchemy illustration that cost $15. :)

Okay, before you start giving feedback, please note: This is a ROUGH draft, and by no means anything I would ever actually let near my wedding. Thing is, I just downloaded Inkscape (a free illustrator-esque program) and was just fussing around. I freehand-ish traced/drew this and filled it in, and only spent about 3 hours on it. I'm still getting the hang of the software.
Anyway, that said, things I know I want to improve (but don't have time tonight):
-the weird green tint - why is it darker around the edges of the continents? I don't know, but will be changing it once I figure out how
-the colors are a little brighter than I wanted, I'll be working with the fades to see if I can get them to bleed a little
-duh, the countries go outside the globe. once I find the dang eraser in Inkscape (yay free software...) I'll be fixing that
Okay, that said, what do you think of this CONCEPTUALLY? We live on opposite sides of the world, and are getting married in another city altogether (where we both grew up), so I love the idea of somehow incorporating that global perspective into our monogram thingy... but is it too cartoonish to have a globe right there?
I dunno... I keep going back and forth. At first I was going to put little black city 'skylines' sprouting out of both of our cities, and a little white church where we're getting married, but I think it's too small, to be honest.
Before I put more time into this, or show it to J, I thought I'd see what the bees think. :)
ps - please be honest! I want REAL feedback!
