I had really bad round ligament pain, it started at 6 weeks for me. I would describe it as a charlie horse in my side of my stomach. It was definitely short and jabby, like a stabbing feeling. Lasted anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 mins. If I turned a certain way it always triggered it.

I have had RLP since very early in this pregnancy, and especially the bigger I got, what you are describing definitely sounds like that’s what it is. Early on it was more on the sides but now it can be on the sides or in the middle. I really think the nurse is just trying to give you some peace of mind. GL hun!

Sounds totally normal. I had lightening crotch and round ligament pain too starting at about 18 weeks periodically and throughout my pregnancy.  I was also very worried and my doctor said it was just everything stretching. Have a perfect six week old son now!

Mine were lower and off to the sides. I had to be really careful when rolling over in bed b/c the pain would be so stabbing that I wanted to cry out loud! I also had a lot of weird pains here and there that must have been the uterus stretching. The lightning crotch and lightning boobs were so weird too!

KatieBklyn:  I had this earlier in pregnancy, probably around 8 or 9 weeks, and it was more to the side. But then around 13weeks the pain had moved to my lower abdomen right in the center. I was concerned enough to call my doc because it wasn’t the same type of pain I had felt before. They had me come in just to be safe, but it was all for nothing. Just some growing pains. The nurse likely just offered to have you come in on the very small chance that it could be something else and so that you aren’t worrying about it until your next appointment.

Yeah, I always figured any sharp cramps were round ligament pain.  I usually had them lower down on the sides (both sides).  I’d only be worried if it didn’t go away or it was so painful you couldn’t go about your day to day activities.  Also had the lightening crotch on and off throughout, fun!

Lyndzo:  I’m 6 weeks now and I had no idea I could experience this so early, but listening to everyone’s explanation of the stabbing pains when rolling over has definately given me an “ah-ha” moment. Did it last from 6 weeks on, or did it come and go? I’m also having some spotting with these cramps. If I move wrong I know it!

KatieBklyn:  You can get all sorts of stretching pains when you are pregnant.  What you are describing sounds totally normal.

First pregnancy, my hips spread, I had round ligament pain, my pelvic bone spread– I was constantly in some sort of pain when it came to the areas AROUND my belly– (all the areas I just mentioned).

While what you are feeling sounds totally normal, there’s no reason to not to get a scan if you were offered. It’s always nice to have peace of mind- and see your baby 🙂

mrscorgi:  It should come and go– moving, getting up, sneezing or coughing– these are all things that can trigger a short-lived but relatively severe pain when the round ligaments are stretching.

MrsEME:  rolling over in bed or twisting my torso the wrong way, or getting up from sitting too long can set it off for me. Mostly its at night rolling over in bed, or randomly throughout the day if I twist wrong.

It’s because of questions like these that I wish people were more open and up front about normal pregnancy experiences! Throughout my entire first trimester, and well into the second, I had so many aches and pains that were perfectly normal– I just didn’t know to expect them. Talking to friends that had been pregnant, it turns out they had the same pains and worries but it all turned out fine.

What you describe sounds normal to me!
