I am getting married in June to my fiance who is a Marine. I will be moving to live on the base with him which is states away and he says he will need to take paperwork which includes my new ss card with my new name on it. however. my card will not arrive before he
has to go back. i want him to have it so i can go to him soon. so i was wondering if anyone knows if you can rush your ss card to arrive sooner than the usual 10 business days? i live in arkansas if thats any help.

I’m Canadian, but there is no option of rushing our cards as they come by regular mail and that’s it. However, we get print-outs of our numbers and new name to use right away (actually we are getting rid of SIN cards entirely by March this year). Do you apply for a name change to your card in person like we do?

You should get a print out the day you go verifying your new name and your SS number. The card will come a week or so later

Can you send him with your marriage license and your old SS card, then change your name while you’re living together?

There’s no way to rush it in the US, unfortunately. They give you a printout receipt when you do it, but nothing that would be proof of actual SSN under that name 🙁 Mine only took a week to arrive, though, not 10 days.
The whole name change process takes time. It took 7 weeks for them to just process our marriage license/certificate and send the copies back to me, at which point I could then take that to the SS office and change my name on my SS card, and then it took a week for my new SS card to come. So with me doing things as fast as possible, it took two months to get my new card.
What’s the timeline here?

They give you a printout with your new name on it. The actual card came in 2 days for me.

@AnnieLuvena: Oh, maybe take the signed copy in to the SS office before you send it in, then! Because yea, it shouldn’t take the full ten days for the card to arrive once you’ve applied for it. Best of luck!!

I am ex military and my husband is currently in the Army so I can give you a few options other than dealing with the hassle of trying to rush your SS card. We got married in July of 2013 and are not having our big wedding until July of 2014 so I have yet to change my name but was still able to be enrolled in the military dependent system. You do not have to have the same last name as your husband to be enrolled, you just have to show your marriage certificate and proper identification. Once you change your name legallly, then you will take your new SS card and state ID into the office and change your name in the system. Might be easier in the long run because waiting to enroll will just make the process of recieving your benefits much more difficult.

@BellieBee: +1. You are not required to have the same as your husband to ‘move on base.’ All you need is Marriage certificate, Spouse birth certificate, Spouse Social Security card, Spouse photo ID in order to be registered in the dependent system. I would advise that your card and ID have the same name though to make sure there’s no question. Then once your name is updated on your SS card and photo ID then you can go back in to the office to have your name changed.

You just have to be married. Don’t bother with the name change until after you’re all set and moved. Don’t complicate things because you want your name to match on all the paperwork.

@AnnieLuvena: Mine came in 10 days and I didn’t rush it. I don’t think you can rush it. I do know that the system was updated with my new name overnight, so if they pull your SSN they can see your new name.
