I have been thinking about this all day and trying not to freak out about it. My husband brought our little man to the park earlier today to work on his training and then play fetch as the reward. On the way home, the vehicle in front of his struck a puppy running loose. My husband said that the dog made the most awful wailing sound he has ever heard 🙁
The driver who hit the dog kept going. MrPanda99 and I are both animal lovers. We prefer animals to people and would do anything to help them. Of course, MrPanda99 picked up the puppy and brought him to our vet. Apparently this puppy is not microchipped and has no ID at all. The vet did surgery and the puppy is going to be okay…but he still has no home.
We have decided that if no one claims him, we are going to keep him. I am so glad I was not there to witness this poor dog being hit by a car. I would have been torn between wanting to grab the puppy and wanting to run over the driver with my truck. I understand accidents happen, but you could at least STOP. He probably didn’t want to pay the vet bills.

@MrsPanda99: Wow, that’s awful and wonderful at the same time! I hope you keep him. It sounds like fate. 🙂 We recently had a little min pin come clawing at our door of our new house… so we brought him inside and posted an ad on Craigslist saying we found him. We figured if no one claimed him, we would keep him. But someone claimed him the next day 🙁

@QueenOfSerendip: I am glad he was reunited with his owner…imagine how beside yourself you would be if that was your little guy! I’m equally glad he went to YOUR door and not someone else’s who wouldn’t have helped him. You guys will get your own doggy 😀
@prettyinpink11: I would have killed him if he didn’t save the puppy!

I can’t believe he didn’t stop! I’m glad you and MrPanda are such great animal lovers!!

@MrsBeck: We have been talking about a second dog for awhile now so it is perfect timing…just a terribly sad circumstance. I hate to see innocent animals in pain. I can’t believe he didn’t even have a collar!

I hope you guys keep him! He’s going to have loving parents that will cherish him.

Awww, I’m glad your husband helped the puppy! I would have bawled if I’d witnessed that.
In other news, your vets do surgery on dogs for free? Or did your hubs and you foot the vet bill? (I know you’re in Canada so I was just wondering if it’s different than it would be here. Surgery is expensive!)

@Serey: I hope we can keep him too! If he belongs to someone, they are not doing a very good job of taking care of him. The vet said he is underweight and he was off leash all alone 🙁 We have a farm, so he would love to live there!

@icanhearyousmile: I would have been a basket case. My husband is always so calm, so I am glad he was there and not me. We actually did have to pay for the surgery. I don’t know what else we could have done though! I’m not sure if the vet would have helped him if someone wasn’t paying? I wonder what happens in those instances. That is a terrible thought.

@MrsPanda99: Congrats on your new puppy! What a great story!
My Dad and uncle were driving in Vermont many years ago to go snowmobileing (I know I spelled that wrong). On the way, they hit a dog.
My uncle was HORRIFIED and couldn’t stop crying! But my Dad (who was driving) never stopped (Despite feeling the dog go under the truck, then under the TWO trailers)
10 years later, my Dad attacked two people with a chainsaw!
Moral of the story: People who don’t stop for dogs they hit are terrible people 😛

Awww, bless your hearts!! I’ve heard a few devastating dog abuse cases within the last few days, so THANK YOU so much for sharing such a good one. This pup will be so lucky to have you guys.

What an asshole! The guy who didn’t stop deserves to be run over himself. Jackass. People like that really piss me off.
Anyway, you guys are doing a sweet thing and that poor dog is lucky your fiancé was there when he was. Good luck to the little guy!

@MrsPanda99: That is so nice of you guys, you guys are great animal people. 🙂 I’d have a menagerie out on a farm away from people if I could too, lol. I also tend to prefer animals over people. Animals love unconditionally and don’t care what you look like or how much you weigh or what you say to them, they just want to be your friend.
I would have paid the bill too if I had been in that situation, I just couldn’t let a poor innocent animal get ignored because someone couldn’t pay for him. <3 I am so glad you guys did the right thing.
I hope you get to keep him and fix him up proper and make him a member of your family!!

@MrsPanda99: They might try to contact the local Humane Society. It depends on your area and how budget restricted they are. For some areas with a small budget and overwhelming number of dogs animals that aren’t adoptable with a small amount of medical care are often put to sleep, they simply cannot afford to get them healthy.
I can’t imagine hitting any animal and not stopping. How lucky that puppy was to have you there! Looking forward to photos of your potential new pup.
