LOL, you should get your new one soon. Here in CA they gave me back my old one while I was waiting for my new one. Same with my driver's license.
Aw! They never took mine...weird. I got my new license and SS card the same day and I actually cried a little bit because it felt like the "old" me was gone.
WoW...i don't know how I would have reacted to that. I didn't take mine with me, so she didn't have the chance to rip it up, lol I just got my new one today!
@meliss - I should get my new card in about 2 weeks in the mail. I'm not sure why she had to throw it out. poo :(
@Treasure43 - I know, I feel like I have no identity! lol I'm changing my license next, but thought I needed my new SS card to do that...is that not the case?
They didn't rip mine up in front of me but took it and told me it would be destroyed. I was kind of sad - I wanted to keep it. But I think in this day and age of identity theft, they try to minimize unnescessary SS cards from being in circulation.
I didn't need my Soc. card to get my new license -they just asked to see my current old name license and the marriage certificate. They DID give me a bit of a run around saying they needed my "registration" because they had to change that. So I went back home (hubby had driven) and got it. Got back to the DMV to be told no, they needed my Title, not registration. *Sigh* I'm going to another DMV tomorrow, with both.
yup - here in Indiana I still have my original SS card and my drivers license...i actually carry both in my purse - probably shouldn't do that - i need to put the old one in our safe. :P
I think I would be sad too! Mine has my childhood signature on it! I remember practicing writing it before I got my card, and it's really the document that is my first legal signing of anything!
I guess it makes sense why they do it, it's just very odd that they're so inconsistent! I wasn't even asked to show my old card. I did need the new card to get a DL though, and many states are switching to stricter DL identification laws over the next couple years. FL switched earlier this year. I wouldn't risk waiting in that long line without your new social security card! But hooray for name changes!
I would be sad too! And I agree, it's so weird that they're really inconsistent about letting you keep it or not.
Guess I'll find out sooner or later if they'll let me keep mine...whenever I get around to actually changing my name on more than just my email signature!
I just changed my name yesterday and they didn't even need to see my old one. All I needed was my marriage license and my driver's license...
I hate when they do that without even warning you!
Since it's a federal card it seems weird that the policies would differ in each state!
hahaha @cola I am just as bad! I just found our marriage certificate in the mail and am putting it off.
I was sad when she ripped mine, too! I've had it my whole like and when she did that it made me feel like the old me had died. :(
When I went to the SSC office here in NC they didn't need my old one. I didn't even have it with me. They just filled out the form, gave me a recipt and I was done! They mailed it to me in less than 2 weeks.

Lol, I went to SSA today to get my name changed officially! The lady asked for my social security card, and after doing some stuff, she ripped it up and threw it out. :(
I was confused. hehe.
