Salty Snack Buffet instead of Candy Buffet? Thoughts?

So we are having a cocktail reception with an open bar... about 150 drinkers.

We will have plenty of "food" but I just love the idea with the aroparthy jars and the look of a candy buffet... Since we are opting to have a cupcake wedding cake and a complete dessert table, I was think about having a buffet of salty snacks such as pretzels, nuts, bar snacks, etc. I think it goes better with the alcohol and since we will have an entire table of sweet stuff, just seems like it would fit..

What do you all think? I have only been to a few weddings total and never planned one. Since we are on a really tight budget, most of the decor/favors/food is being made by myself and/or family.

Just think this would be a super cute idea! Am I crazy?

If you think I should do it, any particular salty snacks you would recommend?

    Any advice is great appreciated!

Love the idea!  I'd prefer salt over sugar any day.

What about a variety of cheese wedges and crackers?  Popcorn?  Pigs/cows in a blanket?  Chips and dip?  Cocktail shrimp and sauce?

    The possibilities are endless!!!!

Im glad I am not the only one who thinks this is a cool idea...

As far as the pigs in the blanket, cheese wedges, etc... we will have stuff like that on the actually cocktail buffet...

But popcorn for sure can go in an aroparthy jar. Thanks I totally didnt even think about that one!

I think that's an awesome idea! And people can bring home some pretzels to munch on on the way home.

Love it!  I don't really have much of a sweet tooth.  And usually the last thing I want to eat when I'm drinking is something sweet.

I did some price calculations today and I think its going to be so much more cheaper to do salty snacks anyway (man candy is freakin expensive these days!)...

I went to Ross Dept Store tonight and found huge aroparthy jars for $10 each!! I think its meant to be!!

We did a sweet and savory late night snack. Tons of cakes for me, and then cheese, mini grilled cheese, and poutine for DH (note that those are all cheese based and DH is lactose intolerant, sigh). Everyone was very happy :)

I'm way more into salt than sugar, so I'd be stoked if I was a guest at your wedding.

Popcorn would be such a fun and easy one, and then you can have those little flavor shakers on the table for guests to jazz it up as they wish with ranch or parmesan, etc.

I know at our bar we'd pour tabasco in the mixer while the kernels were heating up so that the popcorn had kick. Could be popular as it goes great with beer (so that's why we did it, so folks would buy more beer, hehe).

The only caution I have with this is that salty snacks might be more difficult to scoop out than candy, so make sure that you either buy bags of chips or have really good scoopers or tongs!

Fantastic idea! There are so many different kinds of nuts with different kinds of coatings. Try finding Nagaraya Cracker nuts - OH MY GOD they are so so good. I found them in an international foods store. Just google them.

Other nut like things: Roasted soy "nuts" and roasted chickpeas (for those who can't have nuts).

Be sure to show us pictures of the table and food once it eventually happens!

BTW - Adobo is the best flavour of Cracker Nuts (in my opinion), it's a traditional Filipino dish (Adobo) but can be appreciated by non-Filos - like me. :)

I own a gourmet popcorn shop in Frankenmuth Mi and we've been getting a lot of requests for popcorn to fill popcorn bars at weddings.  We have over 43 flavors.  Visit our website at www.popcornwagonfrankenmuth.com for some possibilities.
