Do the alterations first, then take it to the cleaners. I bought samples as well and started alterations 4 months before.
Alterations should be done at least 6-8 weeks before hand. But if you are going to do your alterations first, and then get it cleaned, you'll need to find out how long the cleaning process will take, and start alterations even earlier.
I think the best thing to do is talk to the seamstress that will be doing the alterations and see how much time she needs. It might only take a few weeks, or if there is intricate beadwork or a lot of fabric folds, the seamstress might want to start alterations earlier.

Hey guys,
I was wondering if you could give me some input on the time line and order in which to do things. I purchased a wedding gown from a sample sale for my May 2009 wedding. It is a little dirty at the hem and a little stain on the waist of the dress that will need to be cleaned professionally. There are also minor alterations to be made like hemming and bustle. Should I pursue the hemming and bustling first before I take it to the cleaners or should I clean it first and then do alterations? What should my time line be like? Should all this get done months before the wedding or closer bc it would more accurately reflect my body size? Thanks for all your help!
