I purchased a vera wang dress at the sample sale this past wknd.  And my wedding isn't until September 2008.  When should I get it altered?  Also, it needs a good steaming - how far in advance of my wedding date does that need to be done?  If I get it done too early, will I need to do it again?

Any insight would be appreciated - the fact that i'm storing a wedding dress in my apt for 9 months is freaking me out!  THANKS!

Normally dresses aren't altered until about 3 months out, but perhaps sooner/later depending on where you are getting it altered at.  Call where ever you are getting it altered at, they'll be able to tell you exactly.  Steaming is done after alterations because you're going to wrinkle it up during alterations and fittings anyways, this way steaming afterwards gets it all out and pretty for your big day!

Only other insight I've got is make sure you're keeping the dress laying down during those 9 months until your wedding.  A heavy gown on a hanger will stretch and pull at the dress.

My seamstress asked me to bring in my gown 4 months before the wedding. She'll send it out to be cleaned (takes a month), then she'll have 3 months to do the fittings. At the end she will steam the gown and deliver it to me.

I purchased my dress, also a sample, 13 months before the wedding. I still love it! Don't worry about storing it, mine's been hanging in my mom's closet since April and it's fine!

Alterations don't usually take more than 3 months, but you could call and ask seamstresses what they reccomend.

I don't think you'll need to steam it until just before the wedding.

I had my dress in my closet for 11 months :)  I began alterations in January and had my three fittings done each month and it was back in my hands in May. I had it steamed and dry cleaned a week before the wedding.  Everything was just fine!

Yep - same as others.  My sample dress has been hanging in my closet for (eek) 7 months now, and my wedding is not until August.  Doing good.  I take it out every month or so - put it on - twirl around - and then put it back.   That's the advantage of the sample :) :)
