I would just call and ask. They usually advertise them, so it's not a secret or anything. Just keep in mind that your mileage may vary with sample gowns. A lot of the ones that I saw were in really poor condition from being tried on so many times, although I know lots of people have scored beautiful dresses for a great price.
Just make sure you closely inspect it before making your purchase.
The store that I purchased from always has at least some gowns on sample sale, as they are constantly rotating their stock.

What's the best way to find out if a store is having a sample sale? Do all salons usually do this? I'm worried that if I just call and ask that they might be vague so I can't wait for it to come around.
