Tramontina 6.5-Qt. Cast Iron Dutch Oven (model: 80131/504)

The Le Creuset is top rated by Cooks Illustrated – they’re almost always right. But the Tramontina, which is at WalMart, is also recommended and is their best buy in the category. I’d buy that before the Sam’s Club version.

I think I paid $70 for mine at Home Goods, I dont even know what brand it is but I know it’s some off brand. It works great and I love it!

Isn’t cast iron cast iron? I always assumed with Le Creuset you were just paying for the name. I mean it doesn’t have any electrical components so how could one be better than the other?

I got mine from overstock.com for 30 bucks, had it for a year and works awesome!

@Jer72:  Cast iron is black, what you are seeing with LC is an enamaled cast iron which is why you can get it in different colors. There are definate quality differences in the enamel and the adherance of the enamel. The enamel serves the same function as a realyl good seasoned plain cast iron.

There are different qualities related to the iron weight itself in plain cast iron pans.

I actually was playing with the Tramontina in a Sam’s Club in NJ the other day (yes, it was labeled as Tramontina, and yes, I was in Sam’s and not Walmart) and thought it seemed like pretty decent quality, and that’s coming from someone who owns quite a few pieces of Le Creuset and uses them a lot (my 20 year-old pieces are better, but I think LC has started using cheaper metal since then). I don’t think you can go too wrong for that price.

Yes, I know cast iron is black.

Anyways, mine is a Color Cast in red. I think I’ve had it about 10 years and I use it probably 50-60 times in the winter. It has no chips or scratches and works wonderfully.

You should get one Hope, they make the most tender roasts.

i’ve heard good things about the tramontina and another brand sold at target.  my friend bought the kirkland one is really happy with hers.  i actually got my le creuset from williams sonoma for abotu $120. it started by le creuset collection.  i now have four french ovens.  i think with le creuset youre paying for the name and the lifetime warranty.  i know some people prefer staub over le creuset.
