I'm not sure that's possible in San Diego! She would pay $2500 just for the venue itself, not including catering. If she wants it outside, she needs to apply for a permit through the city and that's a pain because there's a lot of rules and it's costly.
But there is a place in Balboa Park that I know that will accomodate 300 but it's more like a hall, and in the outskirts of the park. Close to the freeway exit. I remember it's supposed to be "cheap" but I don't know how cheap is cheap. From what I remember it's supposed to be very basic, so nothing at all fancy. You should call the tourist information at Balboa Park and ask, they should know.
Maybe she can have it at someone's home? Or at a clubhouse (a lot of properties have a clubhouse the residents can use), but most don't accomodate that many people. But for that budget, it would be very hard with that many people. The only way would be to have family cook everything and DIY, saving the money for the venue rental -or- cut the guest in half and order food and have it at a house.
Regardless, it would still be a lovely wedding, but a little tricky to manage.
@Vitsippa: Thanks, I have passed along your info.
Yes the amount would be without catering as I think she has an outside caterer in mind already.
I suggested she cut down her guest list as that is a pretty big wedding for a small budget.
Any ideas are good. :)
Sorry, I misunderstood! I thought the budget was with catering.
How about the Japanese Friendship Garden? It's gorgeous and they do wonderful weddings! But max capacity is 200. They allow outside catering, though the caterer might have to be approved or be on their list first.

Marina Village is also a place she should look into.
And the wineries in town:
Bernardo Winery: http://bernardowinery.com/events/weddings-and-receptions/
Orfila Winery: http://www.orfila.com/events-private.html
Here's a link with a bunch of top wedding sites: http://www.sandiego-romantics.com/wedding-sites.html
We're getting married at the Japanese Friendship Garden, I think their guest cap is 200. But it's a beautiful location! For that many people, I would look into Marina Village, they have some really huge rooms that might work! Plus, you can bring in whatever vendors you want, which saves money :)
I think all the places Vitsippa mentioned are great, but I don't think any of them can accommodate 300! I think you'll have to look into Community Centers. There's one in Coronado that's supposed to be nice (Coronado Community Center). I also suggest checking out bridalinsider.com. It's a San Diego only bridal site and has lots of great info.
I think Marina Village's biggest rooms cap out a little under 200...
Good luck!
Ok updated info Bees!
She has narrowed her guest list down to 250 people (which should help!) and her maximum budget is $3,000.00.
She wants to be able to bring in her own alcohol and catering and her wedding is in March 2012 so something outdoors is fine (even better if it has a cover).
Suggestions???
She is looking at the Rancho San Clemente Tennis Club today. I guess it is $2,500.00 to rent the place BYO catering etc.
Anyone else have any experience with this place?
I have heard that the Japanese Friendship Garden is great! Not sure about the Tennis Club. We live in San Diego as well and wondering where to get married....I just got engaged so I haven't looked too much into it yet. Anyone know of a smaller venue?

Hi Bees-
My cousin is newly engaged and on a tight budget with a BIG family. She is desperate need of venue suggestions for her March 2012 wedding with a guest count of 300+ (crazy, I know!).
The venue needs to be inexpensive and allow outside catering (not sure why this is a requirement, didn't ask). I am thinking she probably can't spend more than $2,500 to 3,000.
Any suggestions would be great! Thanks. :)
