San Diego brides, I wanted to share my terrible experience when I used A New Twist for my hair and makeup on my wedding day (Ellie is the owner and the main woman who does the hair and makeup). Hopefully this post can save someone the trouble and stress that I had to deal with!
I booked Ellie’s services for my August 2009 wedding ten months in advance, in October 2008. When I originally discussed my timeline with Ellie, we signed a contract for her to be finished an hour before the start of my wedding to allow time for me to get dressed, take pictures with my family and bridesmaids, and arrive to the church on time. We booked three and a half hours for my hair and makeup, plus hair and makeup for three bridesmaids, which she said would be plenty of time. I was truly looking forward to working with Ellie, as the trial that we held prior to the wedding had gone very well.
Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed with Ellie on the day of the wedding. She arrived a full HOUR late, and did not call to notify me when she knew that she would not be on time. Instead, I had to call her after she had not arrived 15 minutes after her scheduled time to find out that she was still over 40 minutes away, which I found extremely unprofessional. Once she knew that she was not going to arrive on time, as a courtesy, she should have called me to let me know. She blamed her delay on being “stuck in traffic”, but in later conversation stated that there is always traffic in the area that delayed her. To make a long story short, she overbooked her day, and did not allow enough time for travel to make it to me on time. Whether this earlier appointment was set up before or after mine is irrelevant, since Ellie should have been honest with me or the earlier bride that she did not have enough time to do all of the services requested because of the other appointment that she had that day.
After we realized that Ellie was going to be significantly late, my bridesmaids offered to do their own hair and/or makeup to save time, but Ellie assured us over the phone that she would still be able to complete all of her contracted services and be done by our scheduled ready time. Once she arrived, she did not apologize once for her tardiness. Despite her promises that she would get everything done in time, she finished an hour later than the previously agreed-upon time, taking the full amount of time that she had originally estimated it would take despite her promises that she would be able to work faster. Again, this was something that could have been prevented had Ellie not been dishonest. My bridesmaids were happy to do their own makeup or hair to allow enough time for Ellie to get me done, and had she simply told us that she may not have enough time, then this would not have been a problem. However, she did not want to lose the money for these services and made false promises about her abilities to work within the time restrictions that she had caused.
Because of the time crunch that Ellie caused, mom was not able to help me get into my dress; I was unable to take pictures with my bridesmaids and parents before the ceremony as planned since we had to rush out the door as soon as Ellie was finished; the time I had planned for pictures with my new husband after the ceremony was shortened because we had to also take bridesmaids/family pictures that were supposed to be taken before; and I arrived late to my own wedding. Yes, I was happy with how my hair and makeup turned out in the end, but it was not worth the pictures that we were unable to take and the stress of being late due to Ellie’s lack of professionalism and consideration. Ellie did not respect my time and I would not recommend her at all, since this is simply something that should not have to be dealt with immediately prior to such an important event as a wedding.
