The photog I am using is amazing! He is a new upcoming photog in Ca- he is more established overseas (In Singapore, Britian, London, & Sri Lanka). I know his wife- and she is moving to the states for a higher degree so he is opening an office in California as well!
Click on portfolio, click on featured weddings then find Lois & Nisha's wedding. Those pictures take my breath away! That was what sold me when I asked him to be the photog at our wedding!
He has more of a photojournalist approach... But I love how he captures tender moments so well. He said he would give us ALL the photos he takes at our wedding... unlike other photogs who ask you to purchase additional (depending on the package contracts you signed). when I spoke with him and told him we were on a budget, he was so willing to work with us and our needs.
If you don't want a full 8 hrs- maybe you can find a photog would do a bridal session? Or e-session? Or is that something you aren't interested in doing. I think most photogs I spoke with would be flexible and do 6, 8 or 10 hr coverage...
Check out my photographer- Blueberry Photography, or check out Cathryn Lovecraft. She's more of an up and comer. I don't think either of them have updated their websites recently, so ask them to send you some samples. Both are great!!
Whoops didn't know about the board! I'll definitely check it out and thanks everyone for the great tips!!
Check out www.Accolade-photo.com and see Tom's work. We are using him for our wedding and he is sooooo personable, creative and has excellent quality work. One example of his dedication is at our initial meeting I told him our outdoor ceremony setting is in an unusual location with some building clutter in the background which could present a problem. After our meeting--no contract or agreement signed-- he went to the ceremony site and took about 100 pictures showing us all the angles he could shoot from to block out any clutter or unsightly background. He did all of this prior to us even choosing him and I think that shows he went way above and beyond.
Good luck in finding a photographer!
You can check out Sandra Reid at photosandra.com Also, a great place to check would be Mrs. Avocado's photographer...I would SOOOO have hired her if I could have done my wedding all over again after seeing the recaps. You can find Kelli Nicole at http://www.kellinicolephoto.com/
Good luck and let us know what you find, it might help other brides!
I totally want to take pics for fun...but march, 10 is way too far in advance :P
What is your budget like? I know a few people that's relatively inexpensive...
F.C. Wong is really great! And he will work with you to create a package that fits your budget! :)
You can see his blog here: http://fcwong.bigfolioblog.com/
And website here: http://www.fcwongweddings.com/
I hired Yong Studio (though his portfolio on his website isn't up to date). We liked what we saw before (we made sure to see a full wedding before signing anything) our wedding and are pleased with our pictures. I really appreciated the hard work and service that he put into our wedding and never felt like he was trying to make money first.
I contacted many photographers and narrowed it down to price and style. If the photographer didn't meet both criteria, I moved on. All of us can recommend someone because their work aligns with our style, budget, etc., but YOU have to like them. :)
Hope you find someone you like (and within budget)!
Yay! Thanks for all of the tips and I'm excited to start digging deeper in finding a photographer. I'm a little intimidated, because like superstar said, March 10 is still a ways off.
How soon can you start contacting photographers? I don't want to contact them too far in advance, due to some earlier posts where people actually regreted booking their photographer too early. Don't want them laughing me off the phone!
So I was hoping to find a photographer for under $2,000 which I have been finding has been difficult. However, alot of your suggestions have started to get closer to my budget so this great! Either way, I'll let you all know which one I end up going with!
@LuetzueLady - how early you want to book really depends on how popular your desired photographer is. It's definitely worth the time to do the homework, but once you find the one you like & matches your needs, I would encourage you to start reaching out.
From personal experience I booked my wedding photographer 8-9 months in advance.
Professionally, most of the weddings we book are at least 6-8 months in advance. However, we are actually starting to get some early 2010 requests as well.
We hired Chris Suwarna and are really happy about our choice! Our wedding is not until September 2009, but so far he has been very responsive, the photos from previous shoots that he showed us were really artistic and creative, and you would be able to get 8 hours of shooting for ~$2K (plus digital files of everything to keep), which is really hard to find here in the Bay Area.
His site is:

You can see more pictures here, but please bear in mind that facebook's photo compression is TERRIBLE and so the photos look far grainier and less vibrant here on facebook than they do in the original files (which you will see if you meet with him).

Cate Corbitt took our engagement photos on a referral. We loved them so much, we hired her for the big day.
Hi Everyone!
Just thought I would update you guys on the photographer that I ended up choosing . . .Her name is Lindsey Cahill and we're really excited. She was super flexible in creating a package that fit our budget and provided us with a lot of different options too. Here's her website: http://www.lindseycahillphotography.com/ Now, we just have to schedule an egagement shoot. We want to take pictures around GG park, but with the weather changing, I'm not sure when we should go (since we have to do it between now and March 2010). Any suggestions?

I'm getting marriend on March 6, 2010 and need some advice on finding a photographer in the bay area. We're getting married in SF and are on a limited budget and hoping to find a quality photographer for a decent price. Any suggestions on where I should look?
Also, how long is a good enough time to have a photographer? I don't think I need one for 8 hours . . . is it really necessary to have a photographer while you're getting ready? Just trying to think of some ways to save some pennies!
