You said no car, but my alterations person is in the Oakland hills and she's AMAZING. I had an ebay Amy Kuschel that she altered perfectly to fit me. She had the dress for four months (although she can do it more quickly - I wasn't in a hurry) and I saw her once or twice a month. She charged me $90 total for a bustle, taking in the strappy sleeves, altering the bust, and taking up the skirt. So even if you can't come to Oakland, know that a better deal is possible!
the shop i bought my dress at suggested wee scotty. i decided to look on yelp for another seamstress- just to see what's out there. I'll probably use emanuela palazzo of moda. she has a shop next to chanel and has done of ton of wedding dresses. i'm in the same boat as you- the dress fits perfectly, just needs to be hemmed. although, i don't think she is necessarily any cheaper than wee scotty you may want to take your dress in to get an estimate.
as for the car thing... i dont have a car either. and i cant drive the fiance's stick shift. so i use zip car! : ) good luck!
I used Gloria's Cleaners on Ocean Avenue (near 19th Avenue). Yes, it's a dry cleaning place but a friend who used her for her gown suggested I go there. She's reasonable and will fix your dress until she gets it right. I had the bust, waist, hips taken in and the length shortened. All that cost me $250. Good luck! She also did all the alterations on my bridesmaid dresses. Good Luck!
mpark46! I'd love to hear what she quotes you on the hemming of your dress. (If you don't mind telling me!) I was going to take the dress last week but was too busy. I'll let you know how much she quotes me when I take my dress in. Our dresses may be super different but it'd be nice to just compare to make sure that we're both getting fair deals. : )
Bora,
I went to Emanuela this past weekend. It turns out that the hem of my dress (Melissa Sweet Lia) is fairly complicated, not to mention that the fabric is really thick (she was having a bit of trouble pinning!).
She's also reworking the bustle, adding cups to the top and adding straps to hang the dress (right now the dress is in a box and can't be hung).
I was in her shop for about an hour, and she quoted me $450! I'm just going ahead and doing it because she convinced me it was more complicated than expected. My next fitting is next monday, and if all goes well my dress will be ready in April (which makes me very happy).
I can just tell she's going to do a fantastic job. She showed me how the dress had been cut unevenly by the previous seamstress, and how the bustle was also uneven.
You should at least go see her. She made me feel really comfortable and she was super funny!
wow i'm totally in similar situation! i have a melissa sweet anastasia dress. i realized that i didnt just needed hemming i needed a bustle and the bust to be alterated. plus its a little loose in the hips. she may even take out a layer underneath because its too poofy. and she quoated me $850! i dont know what to do.... i'm inclined to just go with it but it sounds a little excessive. i KNOW though that she's a super great seamstress (she's worked for chanel and neiman marcus for like 20 yrs) but my fiance's jaw just dropped when i told him.
i'm totally torn on what i should do... but i think $450 sounds reasonable. you're lucky!
Maude,
Can you give the name and contact info for the lady in Oakland hills? Thanks!

so i spoke with emanuela and we talked it out and she is decreasing the fee by $100 and doing an extra bit for free. which i thought was really nice of her. btw, mpark46, i saw your dress hanging!! its gorgeous. : ) she referred to it and said that yours was much easier to do and thats why mine was so $$. overall i'm happy i'm going with her. i'd just die if something went wrong with it!! i trust her 75 yr old hands. plus i just think she's a fantastic lady~
As I get a lot of emails about this, I thought I'd let you all know that the name of the person who did my alterations is Anne Ventresco: http://www.anneventresco.com/

Sorry, there are no users yet.
I bought a pre-loved wedding dress, and surprisingly it fits perfectly except for the length.
I imagine any experienced tailor can hand sew it to take it up a couple of inches, but I'm still afraid to just take it to anybody.
Can anybody suggest a tailor in San Francisco that can help me with this and not charge me hundreds of dollars to do it? Unfortunately I need someone in San Francisco because I don't have a car.
I've heard good things about Wee Scotty, but that they are also outrageously priced.
HELP!
