The Waldorf Astoria is easier and honestly depending on which port you are coming in from, it’s in walking distance.  The hotel is easier to navigate as well.

@MrsDulce: Yikes I don’t know about the Ritz. I’m sure you’ll figure it out though. We love PR!

We went to both places in December so maybe I can help you out!

We actually stayed at the Intercontinental which is within walking distance of the El San Juan.  The shops there are easy to find, it’s all underneath the hotel.  The first day there, we took the bus from the hotel to Old San Juan. Super cheap, only 75 cents per person each way, it was a straight shot down there and straight shot back.  Ride down didn’t take too long, ride back was a little longer and harder for us to figure out where we needed to get off because it was night time by then and the bus was much more crowded.  I think if you are going during the day it will be fine.

We went to the Mall on the last day there, took a taxi from the hotel.  It’s more expensive of course, but PR taxi’s have a set rate from each “region”, you should be able to look it up before you go.  I don’t think it would be more than $30 though.  The mall for me was VERY confusing though.  We kept walking in circles trying to figure out how to get to the darn food court.  Overall it was a little exhausting and we weren’t even there that long!

I would say the hotel is going to be your easiest choice, especially if you’re coming in at the dock right by Old San Juan.  Bus if you want adventure, taxi if you’re short on time.  Hotel shopping will be much easier to find the store you’re looking for.

Hope that helps!
