My boyfriend and I are looking at engagement rings... specifically a blue sapphire.
However, he and I are having difficulties picturing the sizes of the stones.
So if you could please post your ring and the carat size and your ring size so that we may get a better understanding of what would look good.
I can't wait to see all the pretty rings!
@mandigrl04: My center stone is a 0.79 carat white sapphire. The side stones are 0.06 carat each.
ETA: my ring size is 6.5...sorry, I don't have any pictures of it on my hand. Measurements of the center stone are 7.03 mm length, 5.10 mm width.
Here it is! It looks super sparkly there because it was at the jewelry store. It is supposed to be a 1 carat stone. I wear a size 6.
Usually with gemstones I see sizes listed in surface milimeters (e.g., 6mm round, or 5x7mm oval, or what have you). You should be able to whip out a ruler and figure out the size of a sapphire that way! :) Where are you guys looking? (Also: congrats! And I love sapphire e-rings.)
@spaniel: Depending on where you purchase your stone, they'll list the size in both millimeters and carat size. My FI bought mine from the Natural Sapphire Company, and both measurements are listed on the paperwork. But, you're right, with more "chain" style jewelry stores, the measurements are more common.
@peaches13: Right! I would imagine it would be both. I just meant that, since they're having trouble envisioning the size, that should help :) (Carat weight is not that helpful to determine the size of a diamond, either, since it might be a deep or shallow stone and have a larger or smaller surface!)
ETA: Brilliant Earth, which I usually think of when I think sapphires (haha... I'm a September baby), is NOT a chain, as far as I know, and lists sapphires by dimensions, not just carat weight (and I don't even see that at all for their rings).
@BackyardLoveBird: I love your ring! It is so beautiful. Congrats!
Here's mine! It's am 8mm sapphire with diamonds encircling.

Here is mine. It is not a blue sapphire. I chose an orange one instead, and it looks like it is on fire. It is a 6MM Round and it weighs 1.32 Carats.
Mine! It's a blue sapphire, .45 cts. Excellent cut and clarity. I wear a size 5 and I think it's a perfect size for my fingers. I just got my wedding ring so I'll post a pic of it by itself and then with its new friend :)

MMine is a 5mm (approx 0.66 sapphire carats) colour change sapphire. My ring size is 5.75
My center stone is a diamond, but the sidestones are my birthstones- sapphires. :)
OMG I love sapphires! To be honest I never really paid attention to gemstones. I knew a ruby was red and an emerald was green that's about it. However, since joining the bee, I have been shown these stunning stones and I have total gemstone lust!
@latoya: That frog picture is so cute. ;)
I love all these rings!
Here is mine. Its 1.25 carat oval pink sapphire in the center stone and .75 carats with the accent diamonds. Mine came from the Natural Sapphire Company as well and I absolutely love it!

<---- My avatar is my e-ring. 2.5 carat t.w. yellow sapphire with a double halo of yellow sapphires and diamonds.
Here is my engagement ring...the actual STONE isn't a sapphire, but I have a sapphire UNDER my diamond!

This is my ring-- it's a family tradition to have this three stone ring--my grandmother's looked like this, my mom's is identical, and Mr. SecretService replicated both of theirs to make mine the third. And I was born in September which is the sapphire birthstone.
Wow. All of these rings are so beautiful. I think I'm convinced that I want a sapphire!
Thanks so much for all the info too! I didn't know that sapphires are mainly measured in mm.
@BackyardLoveBird:I love your ring! I put it in my inspiration folder on my computer!
@spaniel: Thanks! We're currently just looking around to see what we can afford. He is officially starting to save up for it. So far I've been looking at the Natural Sapphire Company. They have such beautiful settings!
All of the rings are so stunning though ladies. I love them all! Congrats on the beautiful rings!
@Kelleigh710: Wow I love that band! It's beautiful! I haven't seen too many light colored sapphires. It's classic and unique.
Oh I love sapphires, esp. blue ones! My e-ring is not one, but I am hoping to get one as a "push present" some day!
Thank you for the ring porn!!
Here is mine! Not to sound snotty, but the blue really catches the eye. I get compliments on it all the time! Happy hunting!

@mandigrl04: Thank you! I really appreciate that! I wanted a royal blue sapphire, so that's what I got. I love the kashmir sapphires. We got it at shaneco...just FYI. The setting was on their website here: http://www.shaneco.com/Catalog/Default.aspx?C0=111&C111=112&C112=3&C3=7
They have lots of bands with sapphire accents. I had a great experience with them!
You can even choose a different color center stone and mm (size) of the stone and they put it in the setting on the website! It's pretty neat - it shows you how it will look!
Take a look at Tacori's sapphire setting!
I feel in love with this setting and this is the one I choose when me and my boyfriend went ring shopping. Hopefully I get it soon!! lol
@BackyardLoveBird: Wow! Thanks! I'm having fun playing around with the different settings. I love your setting so much, and theres another one that I like that is similar to yours too. However, I was wondering what you are planning on doing for your wedding band? Did you find something to match on the Shane Co. website? Also, is there a Shane Co. by you? Or did you order online? The nearest one to me is 3 states away. :(
@CantWaittillMAY: I don't think that is being snotty, it does catch the eye!
@secretservicebee: I love that tradition! How cool! I wish my family (or his) had cool traditions. Perhaps I'll start our family tradition with the Saphire. :)
@Lesric: Wow. That is unique. It's definitely way off of our price range though... like double. We're poor college students. If you get it though... you should take a picture :) I bet it will be more beautiful in real life.
My man proposed just a week ago, and I'm still getting used to mine! I love it.
2 cts, I think. it's 9mm x 7mm. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I am not very good at this conversion stuff.
My ring is a size 4, btw

Also,
BackyardLoveBird and noritake22, I love your rings!! Amazing settings :)
As you girls can relate...I'm in love with my ring :-) I've wanted a blue sapphire for as long as I can remember. This is 3.65 center stone with about 1 carat in dismonds around. I'm a 5 1/2. Can't wait to see what you and your boyfriend decide on for you!
I love sapphires. I'm lucky that I live in NYC and was able to go to the Natural Sapphire company. However, my lust is too big for my pocket. I fell in love with this Sapphire and I can't let go :(
@mandigrl04: I actually have a plain band i got at e-weddingrings.com. I was worried about that too, but it comes a little high off my finger and the band fits pretty flush against it. I was pleasantly surprised. I think I might buy another sapphire/diamond stackable ring down the road too, but I want to try them on first.
