I have a sapphire & diamond engagement ring. I always knew I didn’t want something super traditional but I didn’t really give my FI any specifics. The sapphire is straight out of a mine in Thailand so I think it is pretty special. He designed the setting around the stone. I love it because he picked out every single part of the ring!

if you are thinking about a sapphire, really think about the type of colour you want. some sapphires are almost black, others are baby blue. Most e-rings are in the cornflower to royal shade range.

I chose my sapphire because it is my favourite colour. I wanted something that was not a diamond. I liked that it was almost as hard as a diamond. Plus, the price is so much better! It meant that I could get a really high quality sapphire insted of a really low quality diamond.

we had mine custom made

we both have saphires in our rings – mine has it as the side stones  (diamond center)  and my fi’s is the center stone with diamonds on the sides  we wanted ours to coordinate since they definitely wouldn’t be the same  people ask all the time if it is our birthstone, etc – but nope, we just loved the “cashmere blue” that we picked out!

I think my FI and I had different reasons. I wanted something that was truly traditional, and I like that sapphires are more ethically mined. I heard there are even areas where the general population has access to them and selling them helps them personally to support themselves and their families. My FI was just really happy that he could get something just as rare, likely more rare than a diamond at a better cost. I’m not one who needs a huge rock, but I do like statement jewelry, so my sapphire definitely achieves that without breaking the bank.

Since getting it, what we realized we liked is that September happens to be the month we met in, its meaning is loyalty, and it looks amazing against a diamond halo. They complement eachother so well.

What are your thoughts? Where’s your ring? 🙂

Here’s mine!

My husband designed it himself!  My only requirements were that I have a sappire center stone, and that it be yellow gold.  He did an amazing job!

Here’s mine! 1.6 Ceylon Blue Centre Stone, Halo of diamonds around it and along sides of ring. I love it, and the wedding band matches it perfectly. (All custom designed by Toronto jeweller Leif Benner)

White and blue sapphires here…

DH wanted to get me something unique, but not TOO out there.  He wasn’t too keen on sapphires until I showed him white sapphires exist.  That said, he doesn’t shy away from telling people that it’s a sapphire/not a diamond.  He’s proud that he got me something different yet still traditional, that will hold up just as well for daily wear for a long, long time.  🙂  My birthday is in September, we got engaged in September…we actually probably also technically met in September, though neither of us remember it, lol.
