Wear it whenever you'd like! You don't have to wear it all the time. I'd also purposefully wear it around FMIL occasionally or for 'fancy' occasions.
Wear it on my right hand ALONG with my engagement ring? Just like that? Or, in place of my engagement ring on my left hand?
I would wear it whenever you like! My engagement ring is 1 ct, but one of my right-hand rings I wear on a rotating basis is a 3ct aquamarine the hubs gave me for our 10 year date-aversary
I wouldn't wear it in place of your engagement ring, personally, because that is not what that ring represents!
I would wear it on my right hand for special occasions along with my engagement ring!
Special occasions, especially around FMIL. But personally, Engagement rings always get my attention, no matter how bit the right hand rings are. :)

I would wear it along with the engagement ring, at least until you have a wedding band to go with it. Then, if you wanted to, you could switch it out for special family occasions. What a lovely gift!
If it weren't so big, I'd suggest it could be a special something blue--maybe you could pin it inside your dress so you have it with you, but it doesn't detract from your own bling?
I wear a 2.0 carat sapphire ring with probably .5 carats of diamonds on my right hand and my e-ring & band that totals 1.5 carats on my left. I never take either of them off. Ever. :)
I agree w/ FlipFlopBride...... No matter the size of either, the engagement ring will get my attention! If you love it, wear it as much as you want! If not, just wear it around FMIL =)
Oh goodness, that is not a big deal at all! I have a 4 carat blue topaz: http://pics.boards.weddingbee.com/38940.RHR.jpg and it NEVER takes attention away from my engagement ring! Yuo should wear it on your wedding day as your something blue, which is what I did =].
Depending on your finger size, I don't think 4 carats is too huge for a sapphire! You get used to it, I promise =]. Nobody misses an engagement ring, lol, it'll stand all on its own!
I say wear it on your right with your engagement ring on too whenever you'd like...I agree with ejs4y8, your engagement ring will still steal the show no matter what!
i totally agree with ejs4y8!! I have several right hand rings that range in size from 3 carats to 10 carats and I love rockin them all the time! I usually wear my larger "cocktail" rings to fancier events, but sometimes I just wear them to accessorize. They are all very different from my E-ring and don't even nearly compete in value to my E-ring and wedding band...just another pretty piece to sport :) DOn't worry about wearing them together...sapphires and diamonds are very different stones - plus your FMIL will love it!

Hi Ladies! I'm in a bit of a pickle and was hoping you can help.
My FMIL *JUST* gave me a synthetic blue sapphire ring on a 14K white gold band to continue welcoming me in to the fam (she is so lovely). The stone is probably the size of a 4CT round stone - huge. My engagement ring is a 1CT diamond.
My question is this: When do I ever wear this sapphire ring? It's lovely, of course, but when worn on my right hand, it takes every ounce of attention from my left hand.
I ALWAYS wear my engagement ring.
