Have you tried department stores? Nordstrom, Saks, Macys... they are all getting in on weddings and I've seen some very nicely priced dresses on their sites that are much more modern than your typical bridal salon might carry.
I'm keeping an eye on consignment stores and all the websites I can think of. It's a lot of wading through dresses I don't like.
I actually found Sarah Seven through Etsy. There were a few other Etsy designers I loved, who have starting charging upwards of $600 for their dresses, ranging to $2,000. I understand why they do it, but it's just not in my budget.
@totheislnds: thank you for finding those. None of them had that "wow" factor that I feel when I look at the more expensive dresses, but some days I wonder if I'm just being unrealistic with my price point?
$400 is pretty low... though not at all impossible. Do think about alterations as well, as they will not be cheap.
Have you looked at preownedweddingdresses.com? Ebay? I'd honestly even check David's Bridal... they're becoming more and more modern and competitive with their designs and many of them are not expensive at all. Vintage? Sample sales? JCrew has some very affordable dresses.
Prom season will be over soon... maybe you can find something on sale?
Oh I forgot to mention! Why not check out bridesmaid dresses as well? Something like this: http://barijay.com/style.php?coll=barijay&showid=849 comes in white/ivory and would defnitely be more in your price range...
or look at JLM couture bridesmaid dresses... and the brand Swoon.
Bella Bridesmaid is a great place to start to find dresses comprable to Sarah Seven but less expensive! No one would ever know that you're wearing a BM dress instead of a wedding gown, and you could afford a really nice BM dress at your price point.

Ok I'll stop now... good luck to you! :)
Brady, thanks! I am in love with one of her new ones, and it's starting at $700. I do love those too, and may go with one of them.
Cleverbetty, I LOVE that! I am heading over to Topshop.com right now because that's so cute.

Hi everyone,
I am on a budget (I can spend around $400) and I'm looking for a very vintage and non-traditional short dress, much like what designer Sarah Seven makes. I don't mean a copy, but that same style, or else a pre-owned SS dress.
Her dresses are all out of my price range, does anyone have any other suggestions?
