I’m having a very DIY wedding and was very excited to find save-on-crafts.com, because everything there is cheap!
I had planned on getting everything for centerpieces and flowers from there, but first I ordered a test bouquet to see what the quality would be (before I shell out 80 bucks!).
Well, everything was fine until I got to the checkout page. I came to find out that my 8 dollar fake flower bouquet was going to cost $7.50 to ship! I’m not understanding this. I’m also concerned that when I do my bulk order next month- 10 vases, 15 or so bundles of dried leaves, and more silk bouquets if I like the one I receive, that shipping will negate any and all cost savings.
What do other bees recommend as far as craft supply stores? Did you have a good experience with save on crafts? Is it worth the shipping?
One final thing- I know many of you frequent hobby lobby. Sadly, I live in Boston and the closest one is 4 hours away!

yea i know!! i ordered the Two bird cages ( for $19.99) and at check out they added over $10 for shipping =( I wasnt happy about that, but I do love my cages! they are perfect for the wedding cards.
why dont you just put everything you need/want into your shopping cart like you were going to buy it all and see how much shipping is, so you wont be shocked if you do decided to get everything?

Ok well hopefully I won’t get in trouble for saying this…I’d suggest/personally request you seek out other craft stores. Michaels and Joanns are great, if you have them in Boston. Lots of good crafts, affordable prices.
And the reason i make my other comment…without going into too much detail, I was employed by the company that runs save on crafts, and actually worked for the website portion of the company (SOC). I choose to leave but needless to say, I don’t like the company, or their ethics, or their policies, or a lot of things they do, and I’m not the only one.
That being said, I’ve since gone to Michael’s especiallly for craft like items and find their selection often comporable, if not better than what is available online (and trust me, I spent a lot of time around the available merchandise). I know there are Michael’s in NYC so there could very well be some in Boston.

I’ve just ordered all my bouquet flowers from them… and the shipping wasn’t outrageous, at all. I’m thinking maybe if you ordered more than a few items at once, the shipping wouldn’t be so bad? Make a mock shopping cart on there, go to check out and punch in your zipcode with all the items you want to see what the difference will be.

I ordered my cupcake tower from another website and it shipped through save on crafts. It was pretty expensive.

I think it is unreasonable to expect shipping to cost less than that, actually. Less than $10 to have something packaged and shipped is really checp – when was the last time you went to UPS and it cost less tham that? Also re: birdcages – they are large items, so it doesn’t surprise me that they cost $10 each to ship!

@LNT:I think we have the same birdcages! I love them too.

Oooh don’t get me started on this one!!
I had spent aaaaages poring over lovely beautiful paper on paper source, so I decided the sensible thing to do was order their swatch book. It was, I think somewhere around $10? Then a few weeks later I got the email telling me the shipping would be…
I know!!! I didn’t believe it either. So I wrote back, asking them to correct the typo 🙂 Nope, no typo. They only use UPS to ship to Ireland, would not countenance using any other service. Dammit, USPS would have been fine!
Needless to say, I won’t be shopping with Paper Source at all now!
It’s really annoying. The onlything is, at least if it’s one big order, you will incur savings on the bulk of it anyhow.
sorry for the rant!

I ordered 8 vases from save-on-crafts.com and the shipping was only $10 and the box was huge but light. You can see the shipping before you buy them.

I ordered 12 mirrors, 36 packages of tea lights, and 5 strings of white wedding lights from save-on-crafts.com–the shipping for everything was $20. It’s pretty reasonable to charge $7.50 to pack and ship an item…that’s why buying a lot at one time saves money. I ordered many things for the wedding from save-on-crafts and everything was exactly what i expected, good working condition, and well priced. Sometimes, if you order only one item, and it’s cheap, the shipping will be more than the item itself–this happens to me a lot with a variety of websites. That’s why I search websites like retailmenot.com for free shipping codes and other money saving codes. You should try it! But I don’t think this particular issue is a big one…don’t give up on save-on-crafts, they practically decorated my entire reception!

In most cases, it is cheaper to shop. While the initial prices online may seem too good to be true, the shipping charges are what kill you. Do not order anything glass online as the shipping is very expensive due to the glass being heavy and fragile. While you may find some good deals online, you have to compare prices (including shipping) before you decide.

Honestly, I find Save on Crafts to be VERY expensive.
Usually I can find the same items elsewhere MUCH cheaper.

I had the same sort of experience. I can’t remember the exact numbers, but I was ordering votive candles and glass holders, and the shipping expense was outrageous. Luckily, save-on-crafts cancelled my order b/c one of my items was out of stock. I went back online and found the same votives and glass votive holders on Amazon for about half the price, and Amazon shipping is totally reasonable.

It depends on what you buy from Save-on- Crafts or any online shop for that matter. Shipping costs all depend on the weight and size of the box. I ordered manzanita branches and although they were really light in weight, the boxes were oversized so the shipping was outrageous. I ended up finding them at a local floral supply store and they were much cheaper.
