It all depends on what you want to do. If you are doing the save the date in combination with your holiday cards, a small note sent to wedding guests should be enough. Word of mouth can be really efficient too if you just need people to plan vacation time. My fiancé and I are sending out STDs pretty soon, but for us, getting a “fancy” kind of std was just a fun thing to do and a nice way to use one of our engagement pics.

Edit: making a pretty or funny STD makes them fun to display in the home, and then I think people are a little less likely to forget. Do whatever you feel most comfortable with!

What about making your christmas cards into your save the dates? Choose a holiday theme but include your wedding information?  Maybe on the front outside put your photo with “Happy Holidays and…” on the inside put “Save the Date! Name and Name are getting married September date location etc etc” with “invitation to follow” on the bottom.  And if you’re sending cards to people who are not invited, just have two different ones?

Also, I don’t think it’s too early – generally, save the dates are six to eight months out, and it doesn’t make sense to send two things so close together – I think combining them is a great idea!

MrN & I have finally set a date of 08/24/2013 & we are sending STD with out Christmas cards to out-of-town guests only so that they can start to make arragements with hotels and decide if they’ll be taking the Friday off and travelling to the town our wedding will be held.
