So Mr. Mossman and I had decided that we were going to save some money and NOT do save the dates. As the wedding grows, more and more items are falling out of my parents budget and into our lap, so this was a place we thought we could cut some costs. Is anyone else not doing std cards? Is it taboo to not do them??

Not at all! Everything is up to you. I don’t think we’re doing favors in order to cut costs. Just think…for every hundred or so dollars you spend that’s like throwing another cash gift down the drain.
To cut costs on STD, we sent them out as Christmas cards. We did photo cards and put a cute holiday message as well as a STD message!

I think it is fine not to do them as long as you let everyone know when your wedding is so they can plan ahead. They are good in order for out of town people to get an idea of when the wedding is so that they can book flights and things.

I’m not doing STDs. My parents and FILs told just about everyone they know about the wedding date so I thought it would be an unnecessary expense in our case. And we only have a handful of people from out of town.

I think it’s fine not to do them, I think they’re actually a fairly new “tradition”. My sister just got married for a second time and didn’t do them for either of her weddings.

- Wedding: September 2010 - Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery
I think it’s totally fine not to do them. You could always send out email STDs as a free alternative!

- Wedding: January 2011 - Vintage Villas
Not a big deal at all! Maybe you could just send invites a couple of weeks earlier for a little more notice!

We probably wouldn’t have done STDs if I hadn’t won a giveaway for them. I think they’re only really necessary for destination weddings, holiday weekend weddings, or weddings where the majority of guests is OOT. But even then, you can just pass on the word informally.

I didn’t want to do them either – but we’re getting married on a holiday weekend so we kind of have to. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.

I did them but that is because over 60 guests are OOT. Also there are ALOT of things going on next year with graduations, wedding, confirmations etc. so we just wanted to send out a reminder.. If you don’t I think that is fine also. They do not have to be done
