We bought a stamp and put that on the back flap, but I regretted that later when a full quarter of all the STDs were sent from the post office... to our apartment. Fail.
On any card I always put the return address on the envelope flap. It's easier and there's usually more room (since card envelopes tend to be smaller).
I think it depends on how formal your save the dates are.
If you want formal, put them on the back flap. Maybe even get a stamp with your address if you're going to have it for a while so it looks like caligraphy.
If it's informal, use return address labels however you wish.
@Lexy: Do you think putting a label for a return address is ok, or do you think hand writing is more apprpriate?
@GreenEyedMoon: Ha! That's hilarious. Thanks for the warning! :)
We're going to put return address labels in the upper left corner. I'm not sure what the "proper" thing to do is, but that's what makes sense to us.
@GreenEyedMoon: WTF? Seriously? They couldn't figure out which side of the envelope was the front?!
When I mailed one of our STDs with the return address on the back flap in person (to check for correct postage), I got a stern lecture from a USPS employee telling me how that is not acceptable and the return address has to go on the front and she doesn't know why everyone does it like that now because it's WRONG.
I nodded and smiled then dropped the rest into a mailbox. With the return address on the back flap. ;)
To answer the OP, I think a stamp or label is just fine. But then again, that's exactly what I did so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
Thanks for everyone's opinions thus far. I think I will try to find someone on esty where I can purchase a personalized address stamp and use that for the return address on the back flap. :)
@AshleyR83: I have done both (hand write & label), and I think for a Save the Date it's fine to use the label.
However, I recently got a stamp and love it, so I would recommend it. Besides Etsy, try Paper Source's website.
For our save the dates wie put labels in the front left corner. On our invites the return address went on the back flap.

Hi bees! I am in the process of ordering save the dates, and I wanted to get your opinion on how to address the envelopes. I plan to hand write the guest names and addresses, but what is the proper etiquette for return addresses? Can I put a label in the upper left hand corner with our return address, or is that tacky? Or should I put the return address on the back flap of the envelope? I know that's preferred etiquette for formal invitations, but I wasn't sure if it also applies for save the dates. Would love to hear your opinion. Thank you.
