I did my save the dates in Jan/Feb for a July wedding. It was fun, and I'm glad we did it. We did decide to go electronic to save my sanity, but we still incorporated some fun design elements.
Yeah, I think if you still send them 4-6 months ahead of time, they can be worth it... but if you don't have any OOT guests who will need to make travel plans and they are really a hassle, you can def. table them.
Good point about the sanity-saving-ness of going electronic. I'd considered it, but I don't know if all of our guests use the interweb. Perhaps.
Curse me for loving paper so much. :-/
The only reason we're doing STD's is because we're getting married Labor Day weekend and we want to make sure people know about it & don't make plans. Otherwise I would've skipped 'em & used the money for something else.
I say skip em, (esp. if you have a wedsite) and use the cash & your talents to make other aspects of the wedding awesome (menus, programs, etc).
I did an email Save-the-Date for our out of towners 7 months out (60% of the invited guests are from out of town). I think they're important to do if your wedding is during a popular weekend that people might want to use for their vacation or if you have lots of out of town people. That said, they don't have to take a lot of time or be very fancy. Because we had lots of out of town guests though, I had to finish most of our website by the time I sent them, so it took a lot more time than expected. Finishing the website also required doing negotiations with hotels for our guests.
I think if you can get 'em out by the beginning of Jan, then go for it since it's fun and usually not a huge cost! You could also just them to to OOT guest, which will cut time and costs...They're a fun way to set the tone of your wedding for your guests, as well as remind them to book hotel, airfare, etc...I vote to do 'em if you can get them on their way before January!
6 months is kind of the limit for STDs, IMO. You could send them with holiday cards.
I'd say do 'em, especially for the OOT guests. Since we're only have a 5 month engagement, I'm making mine ahead of time minus some important information (like... the date) and then the SECOND we manage to get engaged, I'll send them out.

Our wedding is in June, and I haven't done the Save the Dates yet. I've been all-consumed design wise with finishing/doing the semester and taking 3 studio classes, so my designing-brain just couldn't add on another project.
So, it being December, should we even do STDs? I've always wanted to do them, because I'm a design-whore, but part of me is all "Meh, what's the point? This is just a wedding-industry-created-thing anyway. Can't we just send out invitations on the early side?"
So, what do you guys think? Nix STDs, do them, what?
