I think labeled envelopes are perfectly fine.  Calligraphy’d envelopes are beautiful and an absolute luxury if you can afford it, but not an absolute, especially for save-the-dates.

The fancier envelopes definitely make an impact upon arrival, but if you really think about it, do you remember every envelope of every invitation you’ve ever gotten?  Neither will your invitees!  Good luck.

I say go for the labels.  If you are concerned that they are tacky, you could add a graphic and use nice fonts so it looks intentional and artistic.  That is our strategy for our invitations and RSVPs since we can not afford calligraphy.

If i got a labeled piece in the mail, I wouldn’t think twice.  Planning a wedding is stressful and time-consuming!

How about the best of both worlds.  Use the computer, but instead of labels, run the envelopes through the printer.  You can use a beautiful font, and you won’t see that utilitarian label on the front.  My favorite font is zapfino extra forte.  Run them through individually to lessen the chance of paper jams.  Good Luck!

i printed clear labels at home for my postcard save-the-dates, and they turned out beautifully! i downloaded a pretty font from fontgarden.com (most are free, and they have TONS), and the compromise for printed font was worth the time saved from not having to handwrite all of them! i got the clear labels at office depot.

good luck!

i think labels are fine, especially for save the dates, but i second the suggestion for running the envelopes through the printer with a pretty script font. we used edwardian script on the invitations for our formal wedding, using a high quality printer, and they turned out gorgeous. my aunt even asked who did the calligraphy…
