On a woman at my grocery store and thought it was fake. The thing must have had a 6 carat center stone surrounded by 2 carat side stones and the wedding band was an eternity band with 1 carat emerald cut diamonds all the way around.
It’s obviously very possible it was real since we were on the UWS of NYC, but I could hav sworn the thing looked like glass. The top of the main diamond was round and smooth which was strange and it didn’t sparkle at all (mine was sparkling like crazy in that lighting).
Can you ladies tell if a ring is real? Not that it matters, I just wanted to know if I was right!

I think all extra large rings are fake ! That’s why I prefer my modest size ring ! You could have asked her ? “Hi, your ring is absolutely stunning. How many carats should I tell my FI to get if I want one like yours?”

I can’t usually tell the type of stone except for when it has that glassy look to it–that’s a CZ.

I can’t really tell from far away. Up close I can usually tell if it is a good quality diamond… or something else (either bad quality diamond or another stone).
I saw someone with a a huge ring that sort of looked like glass a few weeks ago. I think it was probably a CZ but not sure… it could have just been poorly cut.

might have also been the cut of the ring…I have a princess cut and the top is flat, so it doesn’t always catch the light if you look at it from a certain angle. The same is probably true for emerald cut rings as well.

@hilsy85:I was thinking it might have been the cut. I really can’t tell you what the center stone cut was, but it looked like some kind of cushion cut but rounder if that makes sense.
I dont’ know, in my opinion I think it would be kind of strange to get a CZ that big. Because it’s obviously going to draw a lot of attention, and people will most likely be able to tell it’s fake.
The woman was also wearing 3 carat solitaire earrings that did not look real at all..
