I opted OUT of doing Flowers for my bridesmaids... and even myself! Flowers are BEAUTIFUL, don't get me wrong, but (again, for those of you following my posts across the board, i'm non-traditional) i just wanted something different... i feel like you pay SO much for flowers and dont really get any use out of them... and depending on how GREAT your florist is, you're not even guaranteed great looking flowers. maybe im a skeptic... im going with Parasols. (one of my BM with her dress and parasol)
@msjujubeans: your BM looks great! What will you be carrying?
Love this idea! we did flowers but only for the ceremony - i opted not to have them at the reception and did candelabras for centerpieces instead- i also ordered my flowers in bulk and put them together myself so i had full control of what the final product looked like. but i love these non traditional spins - like your parasols, or cute clutches. Great choice! and like the other bee's i want to know what you are carrying!?
LOVE the parasol! If we weren't having a catholic mass, i'd totally do the same - but apparently, no parasols in church! I agree though - not really thrilled about the idea of spending something like $500 for something that will be used for about two hours, so I'm leaning towards cute clutches with a big flower pin. I *will* be carrying flowers, though, at my mother's insistence - every woman in her family has carried calla lilies down the aisle and it's really important to her that I keep up the tradition, so she's kindly offered to buy them. If I wasn't though, I was thinking about carrying either a white bible given to me for my first communion, or a pretty copy of Black's Law Dictionary (Mr. PP and I are both lawyers, and YES, i know it's totally geeky, but, hey, we're geeks!)
Thanks guys!! i took this picture off the internet, b/c i didnt take a picture of my own but it's the same exact thing... i'll have a parasol myself
... my MOH and Matron will actually have peacock corsages, no parasols
Love the parasols. Even though I am going / flowers, I will have fans and parasols for my guests. Outside ceremony.
@ThePinkPeony: i LOVE the idea of the dictionary!! that is SO different!!! i also opted out of having my wedding indoors (praying that it doesnt rain) b/c that would look really ridiculous having my bridal party in parasols... INDOORS!!
Those look great, I know the day after our wedding looking at the hundreds of flowers used for one day and than garbage. So sad and so much money.
@squeak35: im definitely thinking of doing the fans for the outside!! GREAT idea!!
@msjujubeans: thanks! and I ADORE the parasol you'll be carrying in particular - so clever with the veil!
My BMs are carrying fans but I will carry a calla lily bouquet [not real flowers]
I instantly knew when I started planning that my girls and I would NOT be carrying flowers. I honestly don't care for flowers. :) I am making a brooch bouquet and my girls are carrying clutches with a brooch on it.
@totheislnds: i wanted really tall lamps as my centerpeices with candles hanging down... but those are wayyyyy too pricey!! alas, i think i will have really tall flower centerpeices... at least people can take them home and enjoy them
@Miss Tattoo: that looks GREAT!! is your dress lace as well? that would TOTALLY flow!
I also would prefer to not do flowers, but I haven't found a substitute that I like enough yet. I love parasols, but ours is an indoor evening wedding, so they'd just appear silly.
I considered lanterns, but am concerned about the weight or how awkward they would be to hold for 20+ minutes.
I've also considered getting the ladies nice hats that they could hold, and then they'd have something they can wear in the future (but how many times do you have an excuse to wear a nice hat? and they're expensive)
Hoping to find some suggestions on this thread!
@msjujubeans: I don't have my dress yet. It will be tea length though. Currently deciding between Justin Alexender and Maggie. My blog title is called Tattoos and Lace and at first I was going to have a Dolly Couture dress that had lace in it, but we switched venues and it's going to be a little more formal now. So I was trying to figure out what my lace could be and BAM! Lace parasols!
@WonderTwin: have you tried Muffs? theyre cute!! you could do clutches... what's the theme for your wedding? what are you're favorite things? what colors are you using?
@Miss Tattoo: ooo a tea length dress!!! maybe you could do like a 1940's theme!!! it would go really nice with your tea length dress idea and lace parasols AND tatoos!! i'll check your blog out! it would still be formal and you'll have the best of both worlds AND what you want!
@WonderTwin: have you thought about clutches or a single flower stem?
clutches with a flower on them.

@Miss Tattoo: omg girl - I just cracked up when i saw your post. I can't believe you didn't get the Dolly lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For what it's worth, her gowns were so much nicer than the Justin Alexanders I saw. But you know what? I think it's best you try on your gown rather than order so I'm relieved you didn't buy a Dolly :) Have fun w/planning.
@sfchick: lol She just opened a shop in NYC so that's a trip I could take. I may get a custom Dolly in a print just to wear all the time.
@Miss Tattoo: im kinda new to the site so i cant find your blog... i did google Dolly dresses... theyre REALLY nice! HOpefully you'll find the perfect one!
I think muffs would be just as out of place in a fall indoor wedding as parasols would be.
However, I have been looking around for handbags that are our style. I didn't even consider the idea of having a flower attached to them.
To answer a few of the questions: our theme is A Night In, Out - movie candy on the tables, comfort food for the reception (sliders bar, chicken tenders, potato wedges, specialty pizzas, salad, etc.), however, the wedding party will be dressed nicer than casual (dang dress I fell in love with was fancier than we were expecting to go). Our colors are jewel tones - purples and reds w/light mint green as accent. Wedding party will mostly be wearing purple with some red being integrated (the guys have light purple shirts and ties w/some red in them, the girls wearing purple dresses and the red will be worked into whatever they're holding).
@Miss Tattoo: OMG we are doing lace parasols as well!! Hello parasol twin! lol
@natbug21: yay parasol twin! Where did your orders yours from? I have about 5 sites book marked and trying to find reviews.
@msjujubeans: Love the parasols but I want to know more about the BM dress! Who's the designer?
@Miss Tattoo: i'm thinking of getting the j.a. for my big mad men party :) Go see Dolly - I thought she was going to sell through Kleinfelds, does she have her own boutique?
I did the same thing and my girls wore purple too! The BMs carried white parasols and the MOH carried a purple one. I did carry a bouquet, though (mainly because of the logistics of what to do with a parasol during the ceremony.) The guys didn't wear any flowers either, and everyone could still tell they were the GM!
For those of you that are doing an inside ceremony and can't have parasols, you could also consider a fancy paper or lace fan. They can be very pretty and ornate and definitely less expensive than flowers.
@sfchick: I think it's out of another building. The address is
325 W 38th Street #507
New York City, NY 10018
She has photos posted on FB. I think it's just a small little boutique!
@NJmeetsBX: haha! thanks!! it's Priscilla of Boston!! im also got my dress from there! the BM has a bow in the back. its really gorgeous! look them up!! they have stores all over the US
@Miss Tattoo: Hey this is a website i have been looking at http://www.nanaluluslinensandhandkerchiefs.com/index.cfm/fa/categories.main/parentcat/26678/endrw/36
I had a friend order from there for engagement pics and she said everything was fine. What other sites do you have?
No flowers here either... I'll have a butterfly bouquet and my bridesmaids are carrying these lanterns...
@natbug21: lunabazaar.com has some cheap ones... asianimportstore.com as well
