I sell a lot of things on Craigslist, and the biggest red flag for me is when someone emails me generic questions about “the item” instead of saying “I’m interested in buying your iPad, could you meet on Tuesday?”

This is a good indication that they copy and paste the same email/message to multiple people systematically. If someone wants to buy my iPad, they’ll write an email specifically for me, and there’s no reason to call it “the item” or inquire if it’s still available. It’s also a red flag to me when they ask the price of “the item” even though it’s listed online.

Good catch on the generic tone!

I usually notice that about scams too, I try to see if it could apply to everyone or anything…but I actually didn’t catch it in this one!

Thanks for posting!

@rubysimith:  I got the exact same email, word for word! Mine came from I also got a similar one from

When I asked “Bob Landtiser” how he planned on picking up the dress since he didn’t even know what state it’s in (CT) he became beligerent and went on a rant about how he’s buying this for his pregnant daughter, etc etc:

Yes I am in Madison, FL now due to my daughter condition I did explain this to you I am from CT but currently in Florida thats where my daughter live and she is Pregnant about to gave birth and she is my only survived daughter so you should Understand my condition and let me know if you still want to Proceed and we can Proceed to the next step.

Sir Bob Landtiser”

The thing that confuses me is how they always say they will arrange for the item to be picked up. Do they actually plan on having someone come get it? That seems pretty unlikely.

Wow I got a similar email about a ring I had listed here! It seemed fishy for the same reason pp mentioned—asking about the item generically. So glad I didnt respond! I figured if it was for real the person would ask again!
