@melisandescott:

I’ve never had any dogs (though I’d love to), so I’m just going to throw this idea out there:  Have you tried sticking your arm through it a few times for her to see that there’s no danger?  Maybe you can yawn once or twice while you’re doing it (I’ve heard this can calm dogs a bit).

Try leaving treats lying near the door, when she eventually approaches, tell her she’s a good girl.  Don’t startle her when she’s around it and definitely don’t force her through.  You can also try sitting next to the door with her favourite toy and playing with her.  I wouldn’t move the flap just yet.  She’ll come around, she’s just unsure about it.

@melisandescott:  It will take her time to get used to it so don’t rush it.  I give myself a few days to introduce something very foreign to my dog who is pretty confident.  Be patient and let her go at her own pace.

I would go very slowly; if she is scared, I think pushing her to go through would just make her even more nervous.  I taught one of our dogs by tying the flap up and coaxing him through with treats until he was used to going through the doorway.  Then I would slowly let the flap down on his butt as he went through to get him used it it.  He was very food motivated so that helped!  Our other dog learned from his dog buddies… I really think he was much more confident after watching them!
