Do you use some sort of strong cleaning solution or have your nails done with your ring on? I'm thinking heavy duty cleaning liquids or acetone might do that? I don't know though.
What carat of gold is it? It sounds almost like you have a high carat (ie 18k +), and maybe exposed it to harsh cleaning solutions. High carat golds are much softer, since they are more pure, and wear a lot faster. Still though, I have an 18k yellow gold engagement ring that I have worn for a year. I have a couple small scratches, but nothing as bad as what you have described. I'd almost go to a different jeweler than you bought it from just to make sure there's nothing fishy with the metal they made it out of.
It's stamped 14K. Inside and areas between my fingers are still pristine. We even bought plain bands to wear when we are doing yardwork.
I leave it on to wash the dishes (regular dish soap) and to wash my hands (dial or bath and body works foaming soap). I don't get my nails done, don't work with chemicals. I don't sleep with it on, or wear it to the gym. I work on a computer, but it doesn't really ever scrape the keyboard.
My work camera is dead right now, so I'm charging it. I'll try to take a picture when I get back from lunch!
Here are a couple pics. So hard to see. There is not very good lighting at my desk & it's hard to take pics of scuffs on gold!
You can see where it's still sort of shiny on the side, but dull and scuffed on the back. You can also see the 14k mark on the inside (albeit upside down!)
I did just have lunch with a friend of mine who got engaged two months ago & her engagement ring is almost equally as scuffed. So I didn't feel as bad.
I think to have a little bit of "scuff" on the back is not uncommon...I have a few scratches on the back also...but it doesnt bother me at all...no one looks at the back of my ring!
Well, if you wear your rings a lot, yes, it's going to get a "patina" shine to it from all the scuffing. Gold DOES scratch, you know? The bottom of my ring is very dull now. Some areas are very shiny. I could have it buffed by a jeweler and it wouldn't be a problem. You could have scraped off the rhodium plating, too. It's just plated, so if you scratch it, you'll expose gold.
Honestly, the only thing you have to worry about with gold, chemical-wise, is nitrogen-based stuff (ie fertilizer--it reacts with the alloys in gold) and mercury compounds.
It's just got a little love in it, that's all =]
EJS! I was wondering where you had been. I hadn't seen you in a while, and thought about preserving my ring question until you returned!
Thank you everyone for your comments. I feel better now :)
@ejs4y8: I just have to say that it's so awesome that you know the nitrogen based chemicals and mercury are bad for gold....
LOL i have a new job at my company and my cubicle isn't so secretive =]
@beekiss2, lol, well, i'm a materials engineer. I promsie I didn't pull it outta my butt =-]
I understand. There have been a few days lately where I have gotten really busy at work. I happen to be posting from home now, but usually i don't get near the computer at home, so I wasn't around for a bit.
When i'm at work, I totally have at least one other program ready to click onto when the bee is up!
Congrats again on the promotion!
Well, people can still come up behind me--my back faces the aisle. So uh, if i was flipping back and forth all the time, it'd be bad =]
Thanks!
@ejs4y8: I was in materials engr for awhile...I figured out I didn't like applied chemistry as much I thought :)
I used to hate it in R&D, but now i work with missiles and other cool military stuff. I think WHAT i work with makes the difference. But i am a total chem nerd =P. No shame, no shame!!!! In fact, i'm excited to meet someone else who's been there/done that =].

Well bees, I must be awful on my rings.
I have a 4mm channel set band w/ 12 princess diamonds.
I noticed literally on the day after my wedding that I had my first scratch. I noticed a "pinhole" sort of dark mark that is really where there isn't white gold on the back (it's weird), and now, 2+ months after the wedding, the entire bottom of my ring is scuffed. Not shiny at all anymore & there are scuffs on the top of the channel setting.
How bad is this? Is it normal? I'm okay with the look, and not having it replated often, but is it abnormal that it's THAT scuffed already?
