If you have a fragile psyche, maybe you shouldn't read this before your honeymoon. But now that I'm taking open water certification, learning about this news just freaked me out and had to share this irrational fear (vent) a little bit here. If you're strong of the heart, read on, otherwise please don't. I wouldn't want any1 to feel creeped out like I do. I know I know, I should stop thinking about it

Yeah, my instructor and other class mates were just chitchatting during our lesson and they mentioned this. I got home and searched for the news and found more.

I'm just wondering why??? Seems so convoluted and twisted...

I saw that story awhiile back on 20/20 or something. He tried to get her to change her insurance beneficiary to his name. She asked her father about it, and he said to just wait until after the honeymoon. She never told him that she hadnt changed it. The whole story was just crazy.

I remember reading about it when it happened, so sad. It disgusts me that he would kill his wife for insurance money. I'm glad she didn't change her policy though.

Definitely seems like it was for insurance money - so sad.

@ eloping - I would think that always diving with a knife would be a good idea too, but not for that reason! You just never know in 'wild' open water what might come upon you.

Its like an episode of CSI Miami. One of those rubbish story lines where you think something like that would never happen, but it did! Awful

I heard about this when it was in People a few years ago. They interviewed her dive instructor and he said that she really wasn't taking to dive training well and seemed to be forcing herself to learn for her FH. It sounded like he made her get certified. I think there was some mention of the insurance policy too. So not ok!

yeah, that is scary. Like Corgi mentioned, I thought of the Peterson guy when I read this. That guy is WAY f-ing creepy (particially because he reminded me of my mom's ex!)

Wow, totally crazy. I feel so bad for her family, that f*cker only got 18months!!! I think I'd kill him just out of spite, the same way he killed her.  Ugh it just makes me sick that there are people like that in this world...

This is so sad. I remember reading about this when the news came out. Honestly, this is why I sometimes have questionable feelings about girls who rush into marriage - fortunately, most stories don't end this badly. But this is part of why I couldn't imagine marrying a person I didn't know inside and out 100%.

My ex is a pathological liar and seeing stuff like this scares me so and it makes  me thankful I'm out of that relationship.

I dive too but aren't officially certified.  I just do resort courses and then dive with a large group.

    This scares me too btw.

Oh I forgot one of the worst parts of this whole story. Not only did he get barely any jail time, he also just got remarried. Really, who would marry this guy??? Im sorry but some girls are crazy.

That is horrible.  I can't believe that he only got a year in prison.  He just got away with murder.  And already remarried--what could his new wife be thinking?

That's so horrible. I can't help but think that these ladies had no idea what their husbands were up too. It's so sad that he only got 18 months and then he's free to go to continue on with his life! How sad and very upsetting

Oh my gosh. How sad for the family! I can't believe the guy got off that easily!

I am terrified of diving and refuse to take scuba lessons. Snorkeling I can handle, buy diving - nope.

    @Eloping - you're a crafty one!

That's terrible, though, that this guy got off so easily for something so awful. I love scuba diving .. thank goodness I've got better sense than to marry a man who would kill me for my life insurance ...

personally im still undecided about Gabe Watson - yes hes a total douche but did he murder his wife by turning off her air, im not 100% convinced beyond a reasonable doubt yet and i think he took the sleezy manslaughter deal as it came with a riduclous little amount of prison time

i have over 1000 dives, i have been involved in a rescue when someone died, a rescue where someone lived and i once nearly suffered a panic attack where if it wasnt for my buddy i believe i would have died myself. people do not behave as expected or trained (and his training was a go by a numbers padi card) when under stress so im not prepared to convict him on the wife underwater death even though he admited to manslaugther

but by his actions to his wifes family since her death (ie he removes the parents flowers from her grave and refuses to let them get a headstone for her grave) and the fact that wife #2 who he married last year looks like wife #1 (scary) i think hes a douche

edit: by memory the manslaughter deal was on failure to render assistance type charges

@eloping, that is right for the manslaughter deal. It was an easier conviction. Another thing that would be convincing to a jury is that he inquired about claiming his wife's life insurance only a couple days after her death and some also said he sought to up the limit before they left for australia. AND the article said that the dead wife had a brief affair b4 marriage... these really establish a convincing motive...
