Hi CT Brides, I need your help. We are getting married in July 2011 in the Mystic, Stonington, Ledyard area as my FI is from there. I however don't have a clue where to start. I would like to come up with a list of lovely venues, visit and narrow down. We are looking 150-200 guests. So far google has revealed Harkness State Park which looks absolutely amazing and is at the top of my list although I am worried about cost.
I have also had someone suggest Elmridge Golf course as an option. Does anyone know anything about Elmridge? Any reviews would be amazing. Plus any other venue suggestions would be mucho appreciated, I just don't have the slightest idea where to begin.
Water's Edge Resort and Spa - gorgeous and reasonably priced. We were planning to get married here but chose against it only because Connecticut would be difficult to get to for most of our guests (I grew up in CT, but 95% of our guests live in other states).
Mystic Inn was really pretty. I looked at that before my venue...I think they were on the expensive side though. Have you checked out weddingreports.com they have a bunch of CT venues listed.
@cecullaton I am also wearing the Bride hoodie from VS! It was just delivered the other day and it is sooo cute on. My wedding is in August so I'll probably wear it with a cute pair of shorts.
I also plan on wearing it on the way to our honeyomoon...I always freeze on planes.
OOPS...sorry...wrong post. not sure how i ended up on this one when I hit submit
I grew up right near Water's Edge...it's a beautiful spot! I've also heard great things about Harkness State Park. Other good spots in the area include:
Mystic Seaport, The Branford House (on the campus of UCONN at Avery Point in Stonington), Saltwater Farm Vineyard, Guilford Yacht Club, Saybrook Point Inn and Spa...there are a lot of pretty options and I'm sure I've left plenty of them out! Good luck :-)
Wow you guys are so so awesome! I really appreciate all your suggestions, this is a wonderful starting point so thanks!
Jonathen Edwards Winery in North Stonington
Mystic Aquarium
Crocker House, New London
Stonington Meadows, Stonington
CT River Museum (with tent), Essex
as well as the ones others have listed (I didn't want to duplicate.)
I'm getting married at the Branford House and my whole family and FI's family are all obsessed with it. Definitely take a look.
ETA: Their website kind of sucks - I almost didn't even look there. You really need to go there to really get a feel for it.
guilford yacht club is gorgeous BUT they charge $4,200 just to use the place and its non-negotiable! we ended up going with the pine orchard yacht club instead, it's right on the water (www.poyc.com).
@kittyachi - I'm going to Mystic on Saturday for the long weekend and will be looking at Branford House. It is my first appointment so I am pretty excited. I almost didn't bother because you are right the website is pretty crappy. I'm really excited to hear your opinions on the place because a real life brides opinion is awesome. Also any tips on things to ask about?
@plantains - When we went, we met with Katherine who is the house manager and she really was pretty thorough in her tour and all the major logistical stuff. She also has a bunch of books with photos of events they've done there in the past to give you a good idea of what you can do. I can't remember if I even had to ask her any specific questions but you'll find that certain questions will just come to mind when you're touring especially since you've been around WB and have some clue of what you're doing.
@kittyachi - I am so glad I went to Branford house, it was stunning. Ii went to two other venues, Harkness and Saltwater Farm Vineyard. All 3 were lovely, but their Saturdays were completely booked for wedding until October next year! It looks like I may be forced into a Sunday wedding :(
I was just curious as to what you were doing for catering. If I choose Branford house, I would love to have an idea of what the real cost will be once I factor in food etc.
This may not be your cup of tea...but I am getting married at Lake of Isles in North Stonington. My thoughts about my wedding were that I wanted my friends and family to make it a weekend event. Many of them are staying at Foxwoods Friday and Saturday evening.
Sheila from Lake of Isles has been fantastic to work with.
@ missstella - I'm not too familiar with th earea, what is Lake of Isles?
Lake of Isles is the golf resort across the street from Foxwoods Casino. It is a really nice place. The ceremony can be held outside on the deck overlooking the lake or inside for inclement weather. As I mentioned before, thusfar the staff has been great to work with. Their packages are all inclusive. Some see this as a benefit, others do not.
Let me know if you have any other questions. I'd be happy to answer them. There is also a website.
Re: Catering...
We're using Cloud Nine Catering, from Old Saybrook and would have used them had we gone with Branford House, as well... we wound up picking the Mystic Arts Center, which is lovely, but would be a little too small for 150, I think. Branford House is really gorgeous, though.
They are the nicest people, and very easy to work with. The food is really good, too. Here's the website: http://www.cloudninecatering.net/ (we're doing 'wedding stations with raw bar'... just without the raw bar.) And they make fantastic cakes! We actually won a drawing they had so we're getting our cake free... woot!
Ooooh, thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely check them out!
Thanks for the suggestion of Cloud Nine Catering! We've been going back and forth with them for our wedding at Saltwater Farm and I was wondering if anyone else was going with them too.
@LovestheBear - How cool that you are getting married at Saltwater Farm Vineyard, that venue is incredible. Absolutely gorgeous, I was very impressed but it was a bit pricey for me.
@Kittyachi - I booked Branford House!!! Thanks for the rec, like you said Katherine was amazing!!!
@ Plantains- Thanks! We had to make some cuts to get that venue (I also had to beg a little). Congrats on booking Branford House!! It's a gorgeous venue, so romantic!
Hmm, FMIL is now needling me to consider The Inn at Mystic or Saybrook Point Inn and Spa vs Branford House. Anyone who is familiar with all three venues have any thoughs on this?
No offense to anyone who likes this place but in my experience, I did NOT like The Inn at Mystic. The paint on the shutters was all kinds of flaking, it isn't on the water like the brochures/website makes it seem, and the garden/yard area is really uneven and when I went there there was broken glass and beer bottle caps and all kinds of garbagey stuff all over the place. We went there and walked around before our appointment and my dad just kept saying that it reminded him of the Bates Motel so we didn't even stay to meet with them (we told them we were leaving, though).
I can't speak for the Saybrook one because I didn't look there. Stick with Branford House! FMIL clearly has no clue what she's talking about.
@Kittyachi - You are a godsend. Seriously. She is making me all nervous about my choice. She seems to think we might save some money by going with a hotel but I am not convinced. I still think I might be able to find decently priced catering to do Branford House. I will stick to my guns!
Well Branford House will let you use any caterer. They have "suggested" ones but you don't HAVE to go with them. I'm using Coastal Gourmet, btw. They are pricey, but we are also having open bar and a LOT of food (Italian family - if people aren't constantly fed and boozed for hours on end it's like the apocalypse). I guess it depends what kind of food and drink situation you are looking for.
You will LOVE Branford House! It was one of our top two choices! We ended up going with Saltwater Farm, which I am over the moon about, but I secretly wish we could have a wedding at each location! It was hard to decide, but for us, a lot of the choice was made by the fact that Saltwater still had a Saturday date and Branford House didn't. But you cannot go wrong at Branford House. It is the most gorgeous house and on the BEST spot on Long Island Sound. A family friend was married there a few years back and her photos are out of this world amazing! (@Kittyachi, I can't believe I didn't realize this was your venue til now, you lucky duck!)
We are looking at Coastal Gourmet, A Thyme to Cook, and Gourmet Galley so far for caterers. If you want to get a feel for Coastal Gourmet's food, check out Aspen in Old Saybrook or the new restaurant at Mystic Seaport--they run both of them. We ate dinner at Aspen and the food was delicious!
We also looked at Saybrook Inn & Spa. I liked it a lot, but FI wasn't sold. The really nice thing there is that their packages are all inclusive so you'll have less coordination to worry about. They also provide you with a free suite (their rooms are gorgeous), a complementary couples massage, and a room to use either for the groom/groomsmen to get ready or as a hospitality suite for the guests. Oh, and they'll let you reserve a private room in the restaurant (right off the bar) for an after-party should you want one. This is free (but guests would pay for their own drinks). We ate dinner at their restaurant and it was outstanding. If I remember, their total fee for our size wedding was comparable to renting Branford House + caterer, but they do have those nice extras.
Basically, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the options you've tossed around.
@mak418, I'm so glad you mentioned the CT River Museum as an option. I used to work at a nearby marina and always loved watching the weddings there. I thought of it, but I think my group is too big and FI wanted an indoor space, so we sadly had to pass. But that part of the CT river is so wonderful :-)
I love WB soooo much. Having you guys is invaluable. Julialimei, we also had Branford House and Saltwater Farm as our top 2. I so nearly went with Saltwater Farm because it is gorgeous, the bridal room is amazing and the bathrooms are so perfect and modern. I took a couple of pics there
I somehow after taking pictures at both Harkness and Saltwater Farm forgot to take some at Branford House. Strange. Anyway, in the end the drama of Branford House won out. I'm glad to hear that pricing will work out simlar because that is my only concern when responding to FMIL.
The extras do sound amazing, but I don't know that I can be swayed from Branford House. We are having a weeding of around 125 hopefully if I can keep the guest list in check.
I actually have a ton of pics of Branford House on my home computer, so I could post them here if you'd like me to share pics of your venue :-)
It's funny what you remember about places--we also loved Saltwater's bathrooms :-) haha. And FI is "jealous" of the bridal room.
I remember multiplying out the per person rates at Old Saybrook and it was very close to either Branford or Saltwater plus catering...I don't have the notes in front of me, so I can't say for sure how close. But not a big difference at all.
Yes please, that would be amazing!!! I should probably do the same to solve the catering headache. Get quotes from a bunch of places and multiply out by our number of guests. Thanks!
I also have a ton of Branford House pics on my home computer which I can post later. This is the only one I have on my work computer.
Woo, I get excited just looking at that one picture. It has to be Branford House or I will probably regret it on the day.
Gorgeous pictures!! Lordie, didn't realize Saltwater farm had an airport/hanger... hadn't heard of them til recently (we booked Mystic Arts Center back in December). But wow... that would have sold us right there... we're both airplane geeks, and my FI has his pilots license. So cool!!
Plantains - I think you'll be very happy at Branford House... you just can't beat it for picture opportunities with the water right there, and the mansion being so gorgeous.
And yay for WB'ers in my area... woot!
There was a Branford House picture on a blog post back a few months ago... lemme look...
Here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/03/10/science-themed-fun/

Sigh. I drooled over Orchard Cove Photography but they were booked on my date AND ridiculously expensive. Still, I knew that pic looked familiar.
Can I just say this is the most action the Connecticut board has seen maybe ever?
Hahaha...I was just thinking the same thing about the CT board! It is much more fun this way :-) And nice to "meet" those of you who I haven't already met!
@Kittyachi, are you having Coastal Gourmet do any of the coordination? They told my FI they offer different coordination packages/levels, but FI wasn't too clear on this. I guess we'll find out more when we meet with them shortly :-)
We are using a company (Ambiance Events, I think it's called) that works with Coastal Gourmet but they are a separate company. CG gave us the packages and the info and referred us to them. Depending on what kind of coordination you need, it may or may not be worth it for you. There are different packages that will fit different needs. We needed a LOT of coordination because we're having lots of different areas and stuff going on, so it made sense for us. They have been really great to work with so far.
Wow. That picture is stunning! I was just going to say how lovely the CT board is. It really is the most fun I have had since joining WB!
I hope this works. Here is the Branford House's main ballroom.
Still gorgeous on a grey day!
