I bought a gown from Church Street Bridal and I was disappointed to see that it wasn’t in as good a shape as I expected. I bought some materials and took it to a seamstress/dry cleaners for repairs and cleaning. The seamstress talked up her experience and training with lace and I get a great quote on a price and a date it will be finished. I was out and about one day, about 3 days after the date it was supposed to be done and I stopped by to both pick up the gown, and have her take a look at the one I was going to wear to see when she could start alterations for me. My gown isn’t done, and she tells me it won’t be done until the end of the following week (about 11 days later than promised). I did go ahead and make an appointment for alterations, giving her the benefit of the doubt because she knew I was planning to sell the dress, not wear it so I was not on a deadline. I go in for my fitting and at the end she said, “Oh, by the way, your other gown is finished.” Great! I pick it up and head home but I was headed out of town and didn’t get to look at it much until a couple of days later.
Now I realize that she didn’t do half of what she said she would do, the work isn’t great (a ribbon was replaced but has pinched areas where it was sewn on, one of the stitches came right off easily and there was a safety pin underneath), there is a TEAR in the lace that wasn’t there before and I am nearly positive the ribbon that was sewn on was NOT the same ribbon I gave her to use. This gown is a Pnina Tornai so I wanted high-quality materials and I special-ordered double-faced silk ribbon. The ribbon on the gown looks like typical craft ribbon and is not double-faced. To prove this I will need to order more ribbon from the same supplier at my own expense. The bow was not sewn in the same spot as it was before and neither was the ribbon. She was supposed to replace some of the boning and that doesn’t look like it was done either.
Now my issue is that I bought my new dress kind-of last minute, and I only have less that four weeks to have it altered. I’ve already been fitted and time is running short. I am furious about how this other gown came out and terrified that this gown will not turn out well either. If I wait to complain about the first dress she may try to say that the damage could have happened anytime. I’m shocked because she has 25 years experience and had great reviews and talked herself up so much regarding her experience, telling me I was so much better off going with her because my dress is lace and “you don’t want just anyone working on lace.”
I’m so frustrated and upset and I don’t have a clue how to handle this. Help!!
