Hi! I've been reading Weddingbee for months now, and all of you are so inspiring in your creativity and good advice. Now I am turning to you all for help:
What is the real deal on alterations in NYC? Am I getting fleeced?
I have a very simple strapless, silk satin gown. No beading, no lace, nothing. I got a quote for $475 from an independent seamstress/tailor for the following alterations:
- take in bodice
- hem front
- cut back down
- add beaded trim on top edge of dress (which I will provide)
- add sash to tie in back (which I will provide fabric)
- add covered buttons in back
Is this the right price?? Can I ask what you got quoted from NYC tailors/seamstresses?
I also live in NYC and I think that sounds about right for an independent seamstress. The one thing you have to remember is that the price is probably a little higher because it is a wedding dress. I took a bridesmaids dress in for alterations - and all he did was take it in under my arms and it was $80 (However, it did fit like a glove). I got my wedding dress at Saks and they charge a 1 time fee for alterations and I believe it's either $400 or $450. I hope that helps.
I've heard the second you say "wedding dress" the price goes up. My dress is simple silk sheath with a mini train (no lace or beading). All I needed was the hem to come up a little bit. Didn't mention "wedding" at all, went to my usual dry cleaner/alterations lady....$40. Some might think that's risky with a wedding dress, but I know she does good work, and since we are "regulars" when it comes to dry cleaning, they have business to lose if she doesn't do a great job. My shoes are pretty high, so I can always go to a shorter shoe or barefoot (oceanside wedding) if she takes too much off. So I'm glad I'm only paying $40 for a hem (typical for a formal dress), rather than $80 if I had gone to a wedding dress specialist.
That said, it sounds like you have a bit more work involved, particularly stuff that will have a significant impact of the overall look on you, and that number sounds about right for several changes through an independent seamstress. Heck I think even if you went somewhere like RK Bridal and used their in house seamstress, you'd be looking at $250-300 (if memory serves from my experience there)
